Good Evening all ,question for you or opinions , I have a diesel D17 and would like opinions on a different engine given the expense and reliability of the 262 Allis that it came with . I have seen Dr Allis 433 t ,really like it ,what about a 4236 out of a 170 ? Anybody here tried that ? And of course the collector value is diminished ,but I’m not sure that I’d sell it anyway . Thanks All and I’m loving this forum ,great people here !

My series 4 diesel turned out 70 HP with a standard old 17 diesel engine. While I had it, it was on several dynos. It was a great little tractor.

The 262 is a fine engine as long as you let it warm up and cool down properly. No other engine is a drop in. You would have lots of modifications to make. The biggest issue is the steering shaft on the left side.

The Perkins 4.236 or 4.248 engines will have the same problem as the A-C 433-T or 433-TI does.........the power steering ram on the right side makes it impossible to have OEM power steering and keep the tractor looking somewhat original. I've seen a guy who dropped the whole front support 6 inches on a D-19, but it looks so bad and who wants the nose up in the air 6 inches higher ?? Hydrostatic steering with the orbitrol under the fuel tank and an orbit motor directly connected to the manual steering worm gear works very well and it looks pretty original. EDIT: The early One-Seventy's and 175's have a different front support that moves a smaller diameter steering ram forward and down compared to the D-17's.

Ok Doc ,so may as well put in a 433t engine . By the price of the overhaul kit and possible machining it looks to be somewhat cheaper , I’d have to by the orbitrol and motor . Where is a good place to grab pressure ,I was thinking the inlet to the valve spool on the lever console . I like that one you put together ,and I’m not sure you would lose any value ,I’m not a collector , but I want to be able to work the tractor for plowing and cultivating .

Is your tractor a series 4 ??? Power steering oil has to come from a power steering pump.

Yes it is a series 4 , So I can use the original pump then ? That would be beneficial .

Your diesel flywheel fits the 433-series engine I think. So, your live hydraulics would work as-is. Just mount and belt drive a power steering pump to feed an orbitrol. My tractor was a series 3 and didn't have any live hydraulics, so I used an engine mounted 190XT hyd pump for all functions including power steering.

I put a D19 gas engine in a D17. It was a bolt in. I used the linkages from the D19.

D-19/ Gleaner C-C2 combine engine drops right in a D-17 DEEZEL chassis, not a gas chassis.
Clutch shaft too long on a gas chassis and side frames/hoods 3 inches too short.

Tim Fluegel put a NA 301 from a combine in a D17 diesel. He has video of the process.

I think I’d like that 433t , Does it require extensive manifold combinations ,I bet the holes don’t line up. Do you have any pics of your install ? Thanks Doc

Sent you the album of build pics via e-mail. Sheet metal was unaltered except for the hole in the left hood for the air cleaner stack. The air cleaner was a bigger version and I had to open up the hole about 1/2" larger diameter. I used the 1978 combine manifold and turned the turbo around backwards to get everything under the hood. 1980 or 81 model engines have a different exhaust manifold and turbo. My goal was to have it look like it could have been factory built. Unaltered sheet metal is a pretty good way to do that.

Wouldn't you be easier just starting with another machine? If your spending so much on modifying it, because it's cheaper than overhauling it, when is it more cost effective to just get another (used) machine of some type? Frankensteining is always interesting, if you already have the parts, but sourcing them is going to cost you either way.

I would never call a D-262 a fine engine. There were as a G-262.
