I was blowing snow with the WD-45 today at the cabin and all was well then not well. The pto shaft stopped going. The bolt for the gearbox to extension shaft was gone. Is this a special shear bolt? I will buy the bolt, but if I can source it locally I would prefer that. What does everyone else use? What size bolt would I need if I can just use a bolt?  Thanks for a reply. Mike

A pic would help verify this, but it is highly likely the missing piece was a shear bolt.

I would only replace it with same or weaker spec shear bolt.

The factory bolt is a shoulder bolt. Just checked with a Agco dealer and price was around $30.00.

most probably just use a soft grade 2 plated bolt from the hardware store.. You need a lock nut or something to keep it from falling out... should shear the bolt if you hit something hard.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Do not do what one guy did.  He was buying his second pto gear from me when I 
asked him what he was using for a bolt.  He said a Grade 8.  I told him he needed to 
go way softer.  He has not been back  I'm guessing he took my advice.   Den

the shoulder is so you can bottom out the nut and have it TIGHT so it will not back off... Using a selastic nut with a grade 2 bolt will do the same think... dont want the nut to vibrate off.

Thanks for the input. But since I don't have the old bolt does anyone know the size? I can't measure  because the tractor is 2hrs away. Sorry to be a bother.

I have seen 7/16 and 1/2 inch in various shafts .... just take a couple bolts... if they are an inch too long, that dont hurt.

when you get the size, keep a couple spares in the tool box. Wink

Thanks I didn't want to just put a bolt in and do more damage. Learning things as  I get older.

The design of the bolt is such that when you tighten the nut tight, you are not crushing the tube onto the PTO output shaft. The bolt floats in the hole.

Make sure you don't have threads in the bolt hole when drawing nut up tight.

Doc makes a good point. If you ever want to pull the pto shaft, which is recommended for moldboard plowing, you don't want it crushed. My thinking, and I could be totally wrong, is that bolt was NOT designed to be a shear bolt.
