At this point you have been more than patient with the whole bad situation. I would let the wife know that if it's not finished in the next week that you will get someone else to finish it. Enough is enough.

her son , the contractor, 'walks on water', can do no wrong, I'm the step dad so I can't win no matter what..
it'll just be interesting to see what event happens before the roof is finished.
hmm... out thanksgiving has come and gone.
halloween is soon,
Christmas is round the corner.....
at least I can blow off some steam here
thanks guys

I had an ex who thought that of her kids --and they still live with her, both in their mid '30s.  Best thing she ever did was inherit some money and left!!  I too was always the bad guy.

Jay I understand and at the same time you must really love her to want to keep peace in the family that badly. Have you tried to gently nudge her into calling him to finish the roof? Or get another contractor to finish it and never mention it again.

re: gently nudge her
I dare not open my mouth... but.. I did clear away everything around the friggin skid of roofing stuff so she sees and walks by several times everyday. I call that a subtle hint ?

re: new roofer
Hmm, I paid $3000 UP FRONT, for a $2500 ONE DAY job and I'm not about to pay out a 2nd time, beside there'd be hell to pay from her, as her golden boy can't do no wrong...

I KNOW I'm in a 'no win' scenario.....

Sorry to read this Jay, I try to NOT or to avoid use of Friends or relatives for work around my place, if I cannot afford to hire someone and I can do it I do it, if I am afraid to do it as may get mashed I feed money into the savings to pay someone to do it, but NOT friend or relative, not worth the angst.

That's $3,000 up front and another $3,000 to finish, that's how they work it (for mommy to fund them) they think they are pulling the wool over your eyes.  That has been my experience.

No money up front - or for materials only - then a paid receipt or lien waver when paid .
Working for relatives - have done it and had good results - now neighbor stiffed me for 3 loads of black dirt - and spreading it so he could sell place - was going to pay as soon as sold - moved during the night-

I am being real nosy,so don't answer if I am being too snoopy. Was it yours before the wife come along or is something you got together?

My idea of a hint would be some water dripping on her in the middle of the night, from the roof that is not there.

Oh Coke at least he is gone. I was so dum I went back for secondsEmbarrassed. A "actor" about the quality of the "contractor" hung me out for 2 or 3 years to get $3000.  So 30 years go by and he calls and wants more work done, I said I remembered last time an he slammed the phone down.Thumbs Up All right. No he keeps callingAngry so i said to me, a short day he never pays for will keep him awayWink. But darn if he doesn'tClap pay. So I end up planting 15 acres of hay 3 or 4 years and get payed.Thumbs Up  Well now 3 years since I planted the last crop ant payed for it yet and he still calls when I will plant him moreAngry. He keeps telling me he will send  the money, yes as soon as pigs fly. I hear he is selling, but one jerk leaves and a bigger one moves in so thing could get worse.Ouch

So Jay Embarrassedyou ant the only sucker out there.

Not a relative story, but a sorta neighbor.  Mowed his lawn all season, last half he don't pay for...  Sent him bills all winter, no response.  Next spring he calls me again, I ask about the $400 tab, from last year, he says I'll pay it, I say OK, I ll cut it again, this year, just have a check ready for me.  I show up, cut 2 rounds around the lawn, and a diagonal slash through the center, knock on door, get check, load mower, high-tail it to the bank, and deposit it.  A week later I gets the final call from him, asking if my mower had broke down, or something.  I told him, No, everything is fine...Wink

I'm kinda happy, but sad, that I'm NOT the only one in the boat....sigh.
Wife doesn't see anything wrong though EVERYONE else can.... dbl sigh.
We bought this house in 84, paid it off in 3 years, yeesh I've spent half my life with her in this house,me without a paycheck, made ends meet , even took out a 100K line of credit( I'm about 820 in the FICO score up here ) , he's zip, she's maybe a 500 ?...so 'he' could buy a 'flip house'..hmm that was 8 years ago...still ain't flipped.
Man I should right a book about the 'adventures'.
Her daughter turned out  great though.....

supposed to get frost tonight...

oh well... life goes on

Have dealt with relatives on a few jobs and so far have not had a problem. Needed a crankshaft replaced in the Hindu Ford and got a distant cousin who has his own shop to fix it. Told him up front "you charge me just like you would any other customer and get it done like you would one of your other customers." Everything went well.

Jay, probably throwing salt in a wound but I came back from town around 9:00 yesterday morning and a roofing crew had neighbor's house stripped down to the decking, around 5:00 they were putting on the final touches and cleaning up. Part of this roof was 2 story and 12/12 pitch. Looks like they did a good job.

Day 56, yes Fifty Six, yawn..... it's official... FROST on the roof, yet another milestone for the project ! OK, a very, very light frost.. whew, Shamless was kind to me !

Guess I'll go rototill the giant pumkin patch this morning, maybe level the 'drain tiling' I installed 2 weeks ago, then tidy up the 20 yards of prime pony poop I got yesterday, put away all the summer furniture then go have lunch with a friend. Seems there's no end of jobs I can get done while 'others' twiddle their thumbs.

"I dare not open my mouth" OR ELSE WHAT?!?!?!!!

My wife and I are equals.  Yet, if one is doing something that's totally stupid or wasting money or both, the other has every right to have a WTF come to Jesus moment with the other.  It ain't always pleasant, but it blows over.  Are you in a marriage, or an indentured servitude???  I just don't get all the sighs and hand wringing.....Sorry, I know I'm abrasive as all get out on this, but SHEESH!!!

Another milestone...
SEVENTY FIVE DAYS !
Yes, that's correct 75 days and it's still not done....
We've had 4+ inches of rain in the past 2 weeks( thanks Shameless for the 'mild' not 'wild' setting' !!).
He's going on another holiday this week, to  Mexico , again...that'l be 5 trips this year, that I know of...

Oh well....
Now the bet is which'll come first 100 days or (shh) SNOW ??

Probably summer.
I think I would just go rent a room to stay at from someone. If the wife (?) asked about it, I'd tell her I couldn't stand to watch my blood, sweet, tears, and investment be ruined like this in front of me.
You have way way more patience than me. Each to his own but I could handle having a fight way better.
Hey! Take a vacation to Mexico by yourself on the sly and see if she even notices your gone. Aww just kiddin. Ouch

no passport... besides if I left, who knows  what would 'go missing'.....
been to Mexico, florida, St. Kitts, Dom Reb.
I'm not a 'lay in the sun fun' kinda guy..rather be turning wrenches, fixin stuff.
Fortunately the north roof of the garage doesn't leak,so for me the job isn't important, it's their attitude that he's mr. perfect.. I've got LOTS of hobbies to keep myself from selfdestructing over this, life's too short.
It'll just be interesting to see when (if ?) the roof gets done !
