don't they just shoot a metal ball? BIL showed me a sharp pointed thing, says it's what he shoots with his muzzle gun...had threads inside it, sure looked like a tip for an arrow...but i didn't say anything...he's pretty windy on everything.

I have a Thompson Center flintlock, 45cal. I built from a kit for about 125$ about 40 yrs. ago. It shoots a round lead ball with a patch. There a few types of projectiles for it. Is his a cap and ball(inline) or flintlock? I haven't seen mine for about 20 yrs., I, Sons and Grandsons have gotten deer with it, Would like to post pictures but haven't figured that out how to post them.

I know nothing about muzzle loaders but I have a couple friends shoot muzzle loader and they look like spitzer style bullets. Here's a few on a online article.

99 it kinda looked like the middle one in the pic with the blue tip. so...he wasn't full of chit this time? there were threads up inside it on the bottom. think it was about a inch ana 1/2 long.

Remind me of pencils from high school. Find one somebody threw away and use it until it was to short to sharpen. Didn't have to work about people asking to barrow a pencil this way

Have shot all those pictured but not the one you described. I don't use powder pellets but wonder if the threads are used with a rod to hold pellets to bullet and load as an assembly?

Sabots increase the range accuracy and knock down power of a muzzle loader. The only ones I've used look like a boat tail bullet with a plastic cup on the end they don't use a patch.

I've used them for years I don't recollect seeing one with threads in the base, only time I've seen actual threads in a ball or conical round is if someone had used a ball puller on the round to get it out of the bore

I use the Spire point, boat tail saboted bullets in my .50 inline. Also use two of the 50 grain powder plugs with the 209 primers.. I have it sighted in at 150 yards for a really great load. Works great on 800# Elks,,,,,  I seriously doubt you could ever talk me into trying to remove a round ball from the business end of a muskett shooter,,,,with the powder right under that bullet,,,,,,!!!!! Whew,,,,,

Shameless, Folks, That is a impressive line up of projectiles used in front of black powder. Which in a lot of cases folks dont even use black powder, they use a pellet. and then in some states the newer in-line weapons use the primer from a shotgun shell to spark the charge. Making these "flintlocks" as far away from the originals as a WC Allis to a New Kubota! I need to drag my Thompson Center Hawkin out this year. It is the old school flintlock with as mentioned powder, patch and 50 caliber round ball. Couple of us old farts get them out after Christmas and carry them, shoot them, and watch deer laugh as they stand there and wonder what the heck just happened to that old guy with the smoke pole!
So your BIL is going high tech on the deer hunting. Any guy thing like this has to be improved! Couple PA smoke pole hunting pics:

Great Pics,,Chris,,,ain't nuttin like that great comarardy durin the fall hunts,,ain't it,,,?? I remember back in the day,,,all of our family of 5 boys and 4 BIL's would get together,,,wives, kids and dogs,,Chit,,we'd have 25-30 peoples havin a great time for 4-5 days. One Big campfire and lots of great cooking,, and,,,and,,,a little beer drinkin too !!! We had a rule that absolutely NO DRINKIN til after everybody got back to camp and guns stored away in the trks.
I just remembered,,My 3rd Son uses some new kind of powder in his inline that he tells me is twice more powerful than the smokeless pellets I use,,can't think of the name,,,but he sights his smokepole in at 250 yards,,,,dead ON,,,,WOW

On my own Muzzle Loader I use a Sabot enclosed Copper Slug. Shoots great out to 100 yards.

In 1874 a guy by the name of Billy Dixon at the battle of Adobe walls made a kill shot with a black powder Sharps 45-90 shot at 1,536 yards., he did say the rest of his life it was luck only but they will reach right out there. One of the most accurate rifles I've ever owned was a paper cartridge Sharps in .50 caliber backed up with 120 grains of powder. Very accurate rifles, the lock time had a lot to be desired but very accurate

On the blue bullet I believe those would be sealing grooves for the gases .

Actually,,I'm a lot better shot with the muzzle loader than with my 7MM Magnum,,,maybe cause I can't seem to not flinch at the shoulder mashing recoil,,,,,

Part of the accuracy with a Sharps is the fact they are incredibly heavy,even loaded up real stout it gives you a solid shove but won't rip your shoulder off, yup, you need a wall,big rock or bench to shoot off. It definitely ain't your house to house combat gun

i'm not much of a gun person either...i do have a few and can shoot them if needed, but right now the only thing i use black powder or powder pellets for are my....uh...fireworks! man...can i blast off a 5-6 inch tree! kinda looks like light'nin hit it! thanks for the replies guys...i'm sure he's the one blowing smoke, as he can't hardly walk on dry pavement not alone walk in any wooded area to shoot anything! he talks big, but ain't to bright!

Muskets of the 16th–19th centuries were accurate enough to hit a target of 20x20 inches at a distance of 100 meters. The maximum range of the bullet was 1100 meters. At 100 metres, the musket bullets penetrated a steel bib about 4 millimetres ( little over 1/8 inch) thick or a wooden shield about 5 inches thick.
