even if the drive splines are wore out - if the sprocket itself is good - save it as that can be cut off and welded to another set of spokes , Sprockets are hard to find .

Thanks Hector I put the final drive together this evening and it all works well,
Coke :
out of the three 6gs i have there is only one sproket that has not been welded together I assumed that they came new not welded but cast/machined out of the same piece? The sproket is in good shape so i will be keeping it for future repairs i can make a jig and piece one together later if need be. I m gonna have to build a shed for all the specialty tools ive made to work on these 6gs!!!LOL

Learned something new on the final drive shafts yesterday, The 6 splein??(came off of a 1956 hd6g) shaft and the shaft that has 25 or so spleins (off of a 1958)are the same internally and will bolt up and work fine, the retaining nut for the sproket and the seal for the outboard bearing are a smaller diameter, the outboard bearing housing is different as to the exact location of the bearing, the dual row bearing is the same though, i had it all together and couldnt get the retaining nut far enough in to get a roll pin in and the outboard bearing was so tight it would not move, I removed the  entire housing noticed that the one off of the 58 model was about a 1/2 inch deeper, cleaned it all up and installed the bearing and races in the newer housing and it all bolted up perfect. when did they make this change in the shafts? ConfusedThanks

shafts changed around the 13990 s/n. Just after the 6000 motor was fitted and the oil master clutch became a option. Also steering clutch plates changes to sintered bronze here too from raybestos.

The sprocket ring was a replacement welded to the spokes of the old sprocket. In this way the full machine did not have to be broken down to replace the sprocket. Then someone found out by cutting a section out of sprocket ring , slipping it over the truck frame , then welding it together and welding up cut and spokes the full job could be done in hours instead of days.
Cutting a section like 6 or so teeth area allows the ring to be slipped over outboard bearing and axle area and into position to match up with the cut off old area on sprocket spokes.
