Barrel is labeled SAE so I was thinking Motor Oil.

Probably a gasoline engine type of oil, I'd imagine.

I was thinking WD-45, D17, D19 as we used to have those tractors for light duty use.

SAE is Society of AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERS... which means the oil must be ENGINE COMPATABLE... 20W20... basiclly means its a straight 20wt engine oil.... You can use 2owt engine oil as HYDRAULIC oil in most of the older tractors... maybe pre 1960..
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

newer HYDRAULIC OILS are labeled "AW"  .. which means it has ANTI WEAR addatives in it specifically for  valves, pistons and pumps... normally with anti FOAM additives also..
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Well, if it says ALLIS-CHALMERS on the barrel, it should be pre-1985 for age, which would make it 40 years old minimum. From about 1970 onward, the hydraulic oil was "Power Fluid 821", which was used in transmissions and hydraulic systems. In a D-19 owners manual, the hydraulic oil requirement was SAE 20-20W non-detergent of "ML" service classification. It's hard for me to believe there isn't anything else printed on the barrel to help figure out what type it is.

My late Father-in-law ran Pennzoil 20W20 motor oil in his vehicles and the WD Allis year 'round. I haven't seen it for sale in many years now.
