Had a Series 1 D 17 with power steering which of course works thru the distributor.  Sold the distributor/power steering off the D 17.  Installed a WD 45 distributor so I say they are basically the same.

Own 4 wheel 20, 5020 and associated equipment and 1 electric forklift. Also a 720 garden tractor, 720 Diesel. 620 and soon a 616 garden tractor.

I would bet they are but don't know. Sounds like Den maybe switched the drive housing and all and I can see that working. Sounds like you are talking just the distributor.

I didn't get a chance to look this morning. Digging out from the snow was priority. The distributers will interchange, but I'm real sure the timing advance mechanisms are slightly different. The WD45 engine probably reaches full timing advance by 1400 RPM, which is rated speed. The D-17 engine reaches full advance by 1650 or 1700 RPM because that's where rated speed is on that engine. So, if you used a D-17 dist on a WD45 engine, full advance wouldn't occur quite soon enough, as high idle is 1700 RPM.

I would want to know the complete curve characteristics:
When does it begin advancing?
When is it fully advanced?
Total amount it advances; ie 20, 25, 30... etc. degrees.
Is the advance linear?
