A dyno will tell you exactly where the sweet spot is.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |

The flywheel should have had some extra marks added to it to make this easy. The "F" or "FIRE" mark is 30 degrees BTDC on a WC-WD-WD45. So, it would have been pretty easy to make marks for 15 degrees (half-way between TDC and 30 BTDC) and 20 degrees BTDC. I'd guess you will be 20 to 22 degrees BTDC at full throttle. That's exactly where I would put it even before a Dyno test.

I'd probably lean towards the 20 degree number to start.

What you absolutely don't want it ANY kind of detonation under load. I don't know which carb you are using, but if it's a G-226/W-226 Marvel Schebler, I'd drill out the removeable main jet inside the bottom of the bowl .002" or maybe .003" to give your carb more fuel delivery. As it is, your adjustable "L" external main jet will be screwed out several turns which then is maxxed out by the jet size in the bowl. This is sized for 226 cubes at 7 to 1 compression, so a little more fuel flow would be prudent. I've always used colder AC Delco 42 or 43 spark plugs, not 45.
