D-17 Series II......Hydraulic oil migrating to the PD Clutch.
Ok, I guess if the hydraulic oil is winding up in the tranny, it's not a Real big problem; leaking cylinder or bad hose.
It sounds like I have a more serious problem!
Anybody had this problem and what is the fix?

That almost has to be the rear seal on the engine clutch shaft that runs through the pump (has the pump lobes on it) and back to the PD and the reduction gear. I see no other way oil could get from the hydro to the PD. This will require a split unfortunately. Fortunately splitting these things aren't all that terrible.
It's either that or the front plug on the bottom reduction shaft. that one could possible be fixed through the pump opening.

Sounds like a seal issue.

Seal on the transmission input shaft needs replacing.

OK, DSeries4's post got me all up in a tizzie, thinking "didn't you read the darn problem. So I went back and read it again myself.
Your description needs some clarification.... First you say hydro oil in the PD, then you say Hydro oil in the Tranny????? Which is it or is it all three???? IF it is ending up in the TRANNY, then it could be the hydraulic ram seal, or a bad hose in the rear, or as DSeries4 suggested a shaft seal on the trans input shaft, but if it is the PD cavity, then it is as I suggested. So if you could please clarify. Thanks!

What I was saying is, I think I have a more serious problem than the apparently more common issue of Hydraulic oil in the tranny.
The comments seem to confirm that.
Thank you all for your input; looks like I will be "splitting" the old girl!

Don't split it for that. Let the two compartments run together with the same oil. That's what they did with the Series 3 models. Get a dipstick from a D17-3 hydraulic fill at the left of the gearshift/dashboard and go by it for oil levels. You could even remove the hydraulic pump sump and knock out the plug to allow the oil to run more freely between compartments.

Now that's an interesting idea!
I have always used 80/90 in the PD but I see that many guys use the Hy/Tran oil in about everything nowadays.
As it stands now, the oil accumulates in the PD compartment and actually is forced out the breather holes in the fill plug.
That might be a reason, as you suggest, for removing the plug between the two compartments so the oil could seek it's own level more readily.
Thanks, I'll give it a try.

I had that happen on my D15 when I first got it. I installed a loader and used it once. When I wanted to use it again it wouldn't work. All of the hydro fluid was in the PD, so I pumped it back into the hydra compartment and I haven't had a problem for over a year, now. Bob

I had just changed all the fluids and put a weight bracket with two suitcase weights on it and then I took it for a spin up one of my very, very steep log roads.
I'm thinking that while climbing that steep hill, the hydraulic oil could flow back toward the PD compartment and if the seal is bad, would have flowed right into it.
When I went to hook up my Bush Hog is when I noticed I had no hydraulics.
I'm going to drain out the overfill in the PD and put it back in the hyraulics and give it another try.
Thanks you all for your responses!
