You can split the tractor between the eng and torque tube, remove the power director and remove 4th gear,  usually if the splines on the gear are worn, the coupler is also worn and you have to remove the trans main shaft to get the coupler out.  That intails removeing final drives, ring gear and press the main shaft reward-a lot of work.   If there is to much end play on the gears on the main shaft you can install a thicker snap ring on the front of the main shaft and help the jumping out when going on a push.   Ive also reground the shift detents on the shift rails to allow the coupler to slide deeper on the splines-helps to stay in gear and Ive made the detents deeper to make it harder to slip out of gear.  Now if the splines on the gear are worn round and chipped-nothing will probably work except replacing parts.  HTH

Gear jumps are never an easy fix.  Lots of work and lots of money on parts.  I've had 3 transmissions done.  Average is around $2000 in parts alone.

I've fixed a couple dozen One-Eighty's by a new deeper shift 3-4 rail, a new fork and double detent springs. All done by removing the shift cover.
