So about a week ago I was reading the post about a war time B project on this site.
The thread lead to talk about a book "Allis Chalmers Data Book" by Terry Dean.
What I got from it all was that it was a very good book, but was out of print, and therefore hard to get, and expensive. There was a post saying that OkTractor had some on ebay for $38, I bought one, $38 + $10 shipping.
On the back cover it is printed "STEINER", so I looked in my new 2012 Steiner catalog, and there it is for $19.95, page 50, item # BOK074.
Just trying to help people not to get ripped off by OkTractor, as I apperently did.

I'd say that OKTractor bought some from steiner for 20 bucks and some freight and as a business man marked them up to make a profit. Looking at the parts link on this site he's been advertising for over ten years supporting this site. When you bought it you knew what you were paying and what you were getting, and you received it. I know I've gone to a show and bought parts from one vendor, only to find it much cheaper on the other side of the market. I didn't go back to the first man and accuse him of screwing me, I bought and received what I bought, no hard feelings. It's a great book and I hope you enjoy it for years to come. Mike

I am not saying I got screwed, I like the book, and was willing to pay the price, thinking it was out of print, my mistake for not doing my research. However, In my opinion, a 100% mark up is unethical and not good buisness practice, they will not get any of my buisness in the future, and I am currently building 2 ACs that will need a lot of parts.
I'm not upset about it, just want others to be in the know.

If you found an item at walmart for 10 bucks and bought it. Then later you seen the same thing at target for half of that price, that would piss you off enough to never do business with walmart ever again? Like you said poor research on your part. Maybe stiener bought 1000 books and got a cheaper price on them. And maybe OK Tractor being a way smaller company than steiner only bought 100 of them but didnt get a discount for buying in bulk. Lots of variables there, buying one item isnt enough to form an opinion of them. Just saying.

I think you'll find Jim to be a very honest guy, I've done business with him several times both from his site and in person at shows. The price was OK to you when you bought it, the issue seems to be that you found it cheaper later. I think that would fall into poor shopping on your part, not Jim/OK tractors fault. I do however think I would have brought this to Jim's attention offline before starting something here. I know he's home with a new little one, but I'm sure he'll weight in soon

Never been accused of ripping somone off before. Send it back and I'll refund your full purchase plus shipping. I agree, calling my toll free number, or email would have been a little nicer, but that's the way it goes.
$28.50 by the time I can get it in my hands and I sold it for $39.99 then a few percent to paypal, and ebay fees. That's a 25% markup, not 100%. Lastly, I never pointed anyone here to my ebay listing. I would rather you buy them from my website where they have been $29.95 for over a year. I actually make more when you buy from my website. In fact, I've had a few call and say they wanted to buy it at the eBay price, and I sold it to them for the website price saving them $12.50 over ebay and shipping. JimD Pretty sure all my ads state it's a new book, and nothing about out of print.

I have bought many parts from Jim over the years. In my opinion, he is reliable and always has reasonable prices. Sometimes you may be able to buy cheaper elsewhere, but you should do your shopping before making a deal. PS: I always use he toll free number and talk to either him or his wife Christina and have never gotten a raw deal nor had any difficulties.

I was under the impresson that it did go out of print, and was not available for quite a while before Steiner came up with them. I think Steiner has been advertising them now for less than a year. And then Jim Danforth is as honest as the day is long. I would trust him through thick and thin. Dave.

Not going to stand by and let you beat down Jim, I too have done business with him, and in the process of doing some more. Aint going to happen, he is a good honest man.
You said it yourself, you didn't do your research, stop beating down the guy you DECIDED to buy from.
Others know, I am not huge fans of some of the other vendors on here, but even though I don't care for thier prices, I think they are upstanding vendors, have always offered advise on this board even though I chose not to buy from them. But you have never seen me come on here and bash any of them as you have.
Deal with YOUR mistake. Nobody beat you into puchasing from him.

From what I see:
Steiner $19.95 OK Site $29.95 OK ebay $37.99 Now what I do when I'm shopping is figure in shipping and taxes and any discount coupons if offered and usually order from the place with the best price. In this case it probably would be from Steiner. I know there are some on here that could not sleep at night knowing you did not support OK. In that case buy from OK and sleep tight. That Was Easy ![]() |

I'm not a picky person on that issue.
If I can read it it's fine with me. I'm not taking the book to a beauty show. It's kinda like buying a dog. Some are smart and some are dumb. I just want to pet it. Didn't buy it to do my taxes. |

So let me get this straight, you don't do your own shopping and you can't do a simple math problem and it is somebody else's fault? If Jim buys at the advertized price of $19.95 and then pays to have it shipped to his business, then adds $10 to ship it to you, he is getting nothing for the service of sending you the book you want for $39.95. But you paid the shipping from him so he might have made 20% of the original price. How do figure 100% mark up? I have never heard of any business keeping the doors open without a considerable mark up on prices. Many use 100% for starters . |

For the sake of pete.
To make it easy I'll round off the numbers. Base price 20.00 at one place. 19.99 Base price 40.00 at another place. 37.99 That's about 100% using the actual prices. He is not talking shipping and taxes. |

What I see here is buyer's remorse. Bill, you failed to do your research and over payed. This isn't the fault of the seller and isn't a rip off. This was an advertised price that you agreed to pay. No strong arming involved. If you wanted to be helpfull it may have been better to just report a cheaper price and leave it at that.

Just got back from Dr's visit with new baby.
Bill, appology accepted, and we can consider this matter closed unless you still want to send the book back. JimD Jeff... Non detergent :) Use a voltmeter, not an ammeter and 12 volt with electronic ignition. Oh, and I know where G #1 is..... That'll give you something to talk about
