I just finished plowing a few acres with a 185 and JD 4 bottom semi mount plows. The plows could use some new shears but they operate as they are.
My complaint is the plows, plow shallow on a crest and deep in a dip.... They get the job done just not consistent depth... Traction boost is operational.... Depth control is all the wsy down. It functions that way on two different 185 tractors. Headed back towards drag plows. We do have hilly ground. ![]() ![]() Edited by Macon Rounds - 23 hours 17 minutes ago at 11:04pm |

The ground is steeper than it looks.
We only plow up hill. Dead head on the way back.leave a dead space every so often to prevent erosion... Even tried a 2 bottom flip plow on a D17. Still leaning on going back to drag plow. And weighting the tractor so draft control isn't nessasry... Edited by Macon Rounds - 23 hours 8 minutes ago at 11:13pm |

The more bottoms you have (length) on a mounted or semi-mounted plow, the more of a problem this can be. It makes no difference the color of the plow or tractor. A pull type plow of the same number of bottoms might be a little better with the front wheels being closer to the front bottom. Engineering is usually always a compromise. To get one thing (more bottoms/more productivity) you have to give up something (depth control in rolling ground). I guess the solution would be a one-bottom plow at 8 or 10 MPH.

I like semi-mount plows. You can do things with them that you can't with other styles. Most of the plowing I do is on fairly level ground.
To be totally honest, I just like plowing, and plows of all types.

I agree, i also really enjoy turning ground. And envy you fellas with flat clean ground....
You would think the 2 bottom flip plow would be ideal for our steep ground but the rolling hills make it impractical... One bottom plow would definitely be ideal but our rocky ground keeps us in second gear low range most of the time.... |

I was too young, too busy with school, and left the farm for college to learn how my father set up and used the Farmall 806+IH 5 bottom semi mounted plow. Looking back at memories he did a fantastic job. I have our old Ferguson TO35 from the farm that I plow with here. I need to get a pull style plow for my WD. Traction Booster was AC's inverted copy of Ferguson's Draft control system. This video on the Ferguson 35 shows a properly tuned draft system. It may help with your troubleshooting. There was an old Ferguson dealer film explaining the draft control system, showing it lifting and dropping the plow as soil and ground contours changed but I didn't find it. Worth searching for it. https://youtu.be/1FLYGcMXOpU . |

Think back to the snap-coupler fully mounted plow. The eye of the tongue held up the front of the plow and gave the tail wheel or rear bottom slip heel a place to pivot the whole plow frame on front to rear. It worked pretty well. Now, if the Traction Booster was too aggressive, the rear bottom could come up farther than the front bottom on a fully mounted frame. A 4 bottom being worse than a 2 bottom. The 4 bottoms with hyd tail wheel solved that with the depth crank being a floater so the opposite was true. A mounted frame could have had some slop built into the beaming depth screw parts to help with that problem. The Ferguson system hitching points locations kept the plow frame quite level from working depth up to ground level. They claimed depth control with consistent soil texture and if soil texture varied, you then adjusted the "finger tip" control lever to correct the actual depth on the go. This is because of the lack of a tail wheel or rear bottom slip heel. But, I don't think many were all that concerned. If it was turning the ground over, get the disc out and hit it twice and everything was goooood.
