Is it possible to take a dual speed pto housing off the rear end housing of 185 and bolt it on the back of a 170-175 ?

Yes. But you'll not have a 540/1000 RPM PTO. You'll have a 270/540 PTO.

Ok.   Can you bolt a
185 transmission housing to a 170-175 torque tube?    I would think the transmission input shaft would be different because of the different power directors?   Now that I think about it you would have to change the gearing up in bottom of torque tube like you have to when putting a dual pto on a 190

Yes. The Allis 540/1000 PTO system all started up front with the PTO being 1000 RPM and then getting reduced to 540 at the rear gear train. No way to alter that on D-19's on down. The mighty One-Ninety was their first tractor to have PTO design change which involved with two possible speeds and a hydraulic clutch. They didn't incorporate true "independent" power at that time and probably should have.

Yes, they did. And I remember them being a very odd speed, like 800 RPM on the 540 side ?? something not normal anyway.
