On our new to us last year Allis 7000 I installed a new valve cover gasket and indeed found shaving cream. The coolant I had changed as per Dr Allis’ recommendation and after 30 hours on the Tedder this past haying season I had small drips here and there of oil in coolant. What do I have going on here? Motor does not use oil nor coolant. Thanks. Dana

Small black oil drops in the coolant (on a tractor you don't know the history of) may be from sleeve Oring failure previously. It is very hard to get every last drop out of the cooling system and the oil always floats to the top. Be checking the oil fill cap for shaving cream. If the tractor has sat for some time on the level, loosen the oil drain plug to the last thread and carefully let out a small amount of oil. If there is any coolant getting in the oil, it will be right there. ANY drips of moisture coming from the breather hose need to be tasted !! If the drops are sweet...it is antifreeze !!!!!

Thanks Doc! I changed oil and filter last fall when she was delivered here and then after 30 hours of tedding with a spanking new Paquea 6 star Tedder. I always pull an engine oil drain plug as the way you just said and I never saw any coolant. Today I will do that again and report back. The engine had a leaky valve cover gasket s why I replaced and saw the massive amounts of shaving cream. The thermostat apparently hadn’t worked forever either so I replaced it, gasket and all new wiring to a new coolant temp gauge. Now she runs at 190-200*, before that she ran cold and that’s why I figured was making shaving cream. She has considerable blow by also so I’ll taste that too. I figured she needs new rings. As a tedding tractor with ice cold air I can’t see a complete overhaul…she’s otherwise a beautiful ride! Dana

I'll just add that whatever it needs to make it right is worth doing.....keep an eye on it to see if it gets better. Next step would be drop pan and pressurize system for several hours (overnight) and look for leaks down liners etc.

So I bled the oil drain ever so slowly there is no antifreeze in the oil and I looked in the Radiator real well with the light and there’s just a very very little bit of oily film on top , hardly any….way less than when I changed it a few months ago. SO AS USUAL I believe our good Doctor guessed correctly! The man is phenomenal!

My F2 combine had an oring fail at the filter/cooler aperatus right before I got it. Was fixed but had plenty oil on top of water in neck whenever checked. Never could get rid of it....finally dropped a/freeze and ran with water and dawn dish soap then some rinsing. Been good ever since. Decided one day that the oil probably wasn't doing rubber hoses any good. Best of luck Cap'n.

Coolant in the oil can cause an excessive amount of steam to come out the breather hose as the engine warms up. It may appear to be blow-by from worn out rings, but it is the water vaporizing under the valve cover. If the engine starts decently, has the power it should, and doesn't use a lot of oil, I'm not sure rings or an overhaul is needed. I would certainly be watching the oil and Coolant levels carefully. Coolant in the oil and spun rod bearings go together.

Thanks to all…I’ll be tasting the valve cover vent hose for sweetness. Wouldn’t needing rings make more pressure exiting the vent hose than simply water turning to steam? Maybe she needs rings And Has a leaky o ring. I don’t think I added much coolant in those 30 hours but with all that shaving cream I’m beginning to think maybe that’s the problem. No coolant came out of the oil drain yesterday and she’s sat level in the shed since mid Sept. Could it only leak when running? I think it’s time to drop pan and pressurize as Steve said. Happy thanksgiving to all! Dana

A healthy engine would require zero coolant to be added in 30 or even 300 hours.

Adding on to the Dr.s post. Healthy engines also shouldn't have a lot of crankcase blow-by or use much oil. Most engines that I have taken apart for sleeve seals leaking had pitting or cavitation issues on the sleeves or block. It didn't make much sense to just ring those engines.

Captain Dana, good job loading photo of your fine looking 7000. Sorry to hear of It’s 301 quandaries. But glad to hear that you’re pressure testing it. Hope you don’t find any noticeable issues there.
Got me to wondering ~ What engine oil are you running in it? Single or multiple viscosity? Synthetic or non-synthetic?

Especially on older antique vehicles & equipment (1960-80s), I’ve noticed a few new engine oil leaks when transitioning from single viscosity (30w) to multiple viscosity(15w-40). And,, it seems that synthetic engine oil develops even more new oil leaks?

Have you tried using just a straight 30w in it?

Howdy 7060 where the heck u been lol. My whole fleet gets wolfs head or rotella semi synthetic hd 15 40 diesel oil. None ever get near 50 hours before their yearly oil n filter changes. And they have all gotten ALL oils and filters changed throughout their chassis. And all have new heavy duty coolant as per Dr Allis’ recommendations! But this one is a newbie and I’m working out her issues. The 7020 arrived 2 weeks after the 7000 and honest to God she’s perfect! I hope to resolve issues before next spring! Thanks for all y’all’s help!

Captain, so they still have oil under the Wolfs Head Brand?  I guess it may be an eastern think but tests my memory.  Some 6 decades ago I purchased my first new car which was a Chevy from a dealer in Omaha.  At that time the dealer used Wolf's Head oil in their service dept. Wolf's Head provided some sort of extended drive train warranty if you used their product.  I don't recall the numbers, but it was far & above what the factory warranty was.  Some brand names do survive.  Nice fleet of orange by the way.       Dennis

I been busy farming & assisting older kin folk. But when I sneak a minute to relax, I might be watching/laughing at your WD45 4th gear takeoff videos!! Hahahaha.........great fun there!!
Never doubted for a minute, your excellent tractor oil service schedules.
And there you go again,,,,uploading 2 more photos of another beautiful AC 7020, then an awesome 7040, & then guessing your whole AC fleet!! Excellent job!
Always a pleasure catching up with you dear friend. Happy Thanksgiving to you & yours...

Santa going to bring you a few more of the 7000"s to finish the set? What do you need yet? 7010. 7045. 7060 and 7080. Then it's off to the 8000's there's only 4 of them., unless you go 2- and 4-wheel drive. Nice collection keep up the good work.
