I bought a Agco head gasket kit for my tractor. Several folks on different sites discuss using a sealant on the gasket. Whats the proper way?? Thanks in advance, Ryan

I spray on a couple coats of Permatex Copper Spray-A-Gasket. As per the instructions on can.

Pretty much if you don't coat it with something (around pushrod holes and all water passages) it will surely seep oil or coolant somewhere.

I can't see what type of gasket you have, but anymore I use the blue colored Hylomar stuff, which is an anerobic gasket maker/sealer. Wipe it around everything thinly with your finger. Assemble and let dry overnight. Anything is better than dry.

We always used and had good luck with Permatex Hi-Tack Spray-A-Gasket.
IDK what color the current version is, but “back then” it was RED.

We found that it was the best product to keep an Oliver 1600 Diesel head from leaking.

I also use Permatex Copper 'spray-a-gasket'. Available at your local auto parts store, Permatex #80697

And, I always retorque COLD after a couple hrs of running time, which for me includes a dyno run.

I got the head off today and after cleaning up it looks ready for the new gasket. My question is how do you properly torque the two nuts on the thermostat housing?? No way I can get a socket on those two. Thanks in advance. Ryan

At the dealership I worked at they had an OTC special c shaped wrench. It was a box end wrench on one end and a 1/2" square female socket on the other end so your torque wrench fit it. It was bent in a c shape so that your torque wrench was directly above the bolt head and you could torque it like normal. 

Now at home I had a torque wrench that came with instructions that contained a formula to use so that you used a normal wrench and your torque wrench. You measured how long the wrench was center to center and, can't remember for sure but I must have had to double nut a bolt and put in one end of the wrench so I could use a socket and the torque wrench. Anyhow the setting on the torque wrench was much lower to take into account the length of the wrench you used. Google it and I'm sure you will find something.

Using a double box end wrench might work best but the formula is......... take the length of of the torque wrench (center of socket end to center of handle which is either marked or is where the handle picot pin is) plus the length of the extension wrench (center to center); divide the length of your torque wrench by that total and multiply by the desired torque. That figure will be what you set your torque wrench to. So........ your torque wrench measures 19" and your extension wrench is 8" and your desired torque is 90 ft/lbs. The setting of your torque wrench is 63 ft/lbs.

Torque wrench length = 19"
Extension wrench length = 8"
Desired torque spec = 90 ft/lbs

19 + 8 = 27
19/27 = .70
.70 x 90 = 63
Set wrench to 63 ft/lbs
