I am looking into purchasing a D17 IV for my families small farm. It will be used primarily used for toting trailers up and down a semi steep driveway (ribboned gravel) and other chores around the property. My real question is will that model tow a small livestock trailer with two head of cattle in it up a hill? My property has a large hill dividing the front half from the back. I have a model C now and it can make the hills just fine, but needs more weight to do any work on them. Thanks for your information.

The weight of the tractor and the size/condition of the rear tires play into what it can safely tow or pull. A D-17 IV without fluid in the rear tires weighs close to 5,000 lbs with a factory 3-point hitch and 16.9 x 28 rear tires. If it has fluid in the rear tires it gains another 900 to 1,000 lbs. You don't say if the livestock weigh 3,000 lbs total or 1,500 lbs total. Normally, I'd expect the tractor to be able to pull around it's own weight with good footing. Loose gravel changes the scope of things, as does ice/snow. I guess I'd load one and try it with one animal and go from there.

Thank you. I was just hoping to use the tractor to pull the trailer vs a truck. I will need to look into weights and everything I can to add weight to it and make sure the drive is nice and packed.

Like 'The Good Doctor' says, lots of weight on the rear tires will make a big difference, including Trailer Tongue weight. G |

An F-150 4WD weighs less than 6,000 lbs most of the time.

I have a 2 wheel drive Dodge 3/4 ton that I pull a gooseneck stock trailer and a flatdeck 20 feet loaded with 10 round bales . In winter it will spin out at the bottom of our steep driveway. My D17 has lots of pulling power to do the Saskatchewan Yank with fluid in the tires. The old girl carries tire chains all winter(october to may)

Any tractor will pull more than a pickup. I once pulled a 16 ft trailer out of a muddy field with a 16 hp lawn tractor.
