I am at the point of the restoration of getting the fluids back in the tractor. Put the hood on, bolted down, etc... Looks beautiful! :) I went and added the radiator fluid in the new radiator and it started leaking heavily between the block and the head. I mean POURING OUT all over the garage floor!

It is leaking heavily between the block and head (where the metal gasket is). It was also leaking around 2 of the 3 bolts on the water pump! I know for a fact I tightened all these bolts. Took the hood off and valve cover off and started cranking down everything. A few of them were loose for some reason and the rest weren't cranked down tight like I thought. I ended up cranking them down until I physically couldn't turn them any tighter.

Update: Cleaned up the water on the floor, refilled the radiator after tightening everything again and this morning there was a small puddle on the floor again. Seems to be barely dripping from the back left corner side of the gasket. I am not sure what else to do. I can't tighten anything anymore.

ALSO - I went and checked the other bolts like the oil fill and magneto, and they were loose! I don't get it? Can these 'settle'? A little afraid of putting in oil, etc... LOL

Sounds to me like every gasket was installed dry with no gasket sealer/RTV/Permatex/Goop, whatever.

They were - And that was my uneducated fault. LOL I wasn't aware you had to have a gasket sealer?

What do I need to do now? Everything is already on and the tractor painted. Do I need to take everything off again? :( Will they eventually seal on their own once fluid starts running through everything?

If it were me I would remove the head and clean both surfaces and run a tap in the holes in the block to clean them also. My concern is it leaked into cylinders also as you seamed to forgot to properly tighten/tourque the head bolts. A coating of copper coat on the gasket ( I have always used aluminum paint ) is what I would do.   You also said you tightened the bolts till you can't turn them any more, really? Proper way is to use a torque wrench in proper sequence in several steps till you get to correct torque, then re-torque after warmup.

Reason for using torque wrench is to get equal tension on all the bolts.  If you over tighten them you risk pulling threads in the block up causing damage.

After over torquing I'd put new head bolts in. Get a manual and a little help from someone with experience. It sounds like you jumped in with both feet not knowing what was in the water. Good luck

UG - That sucks. Just got it all painted and put back together. :( But, need to do it right. I will take the head back off tonight and make sure everything is dry and cleaned properly. Put gasket sealer on and put things back together again.

I will go out and get a torque wrench today. I have the manual, are the torque sequence and specs in their? Or can somebody tell me the specs/where to find this?

I think we should start over. What exactly all have you done to the motor. Did you just put in a head gasket? Total rebuild? Why?

Depending on the answer you may have several things that need redone and it's better now, then after you have a bigger problem.

Even if you did not put sealer on gasket it should not leak as bad u said it dose .Is your head gasket hitting the edge of the side plate (cover ) gasket on side of block not letting  head gasket sit on block straight , it will hold head up at a angle across block.
Had a customer with same problem u have ,I had him bring tractor to my shop and that is what I found .

b,
This sounds a lot like my luck. There are a lot of tricks and things to do/ not do, on these and I am still learning too. There is a good chance I will miss something and have a issue also. I have been trying to go a little slower on this engine build, ask questions and hopefully make the right moves. Even then, I have had to redo things several times! Wishing you the best on your WD tractor project too.
 Regards,
 Chris

I would use a good straight edge to check the head for flatness once you have it off, check stand-out of the sleeves, and look at the push rod cover as Fred mentioned. Chase all threaded holes in the block and clean out with brake clean and an air hose, toss the studs away for new ones and throw your head gasket away.

Fair warning- engine rebuilding is not something you can just jump into, you need specific knowledge and tools otherwise you are going to waste a lot of money. Also in the future, I would just put primer on the engine and put it in the tractor, and put final paint on after all the leaks are fixed and it's running good. Hope you didn't damage it too bad, good luck.

Hey everybody! Thanks for the all the help!

Update: Leaking has stopped, I ended up taking the manifold and carb. off and torquing (properly) the bolts down. I guess with hot and cold, they had come loose. It was only in 1 spot too, right behind the manifold.

NOW - The differential/transmission fluid is leaking. From what . can gather it is leaking in between the 2 main body parts. Where that seal is. No way I can fix that unless I take the whole rear end out. This will be a project for another day. :)
