I’ve been sifting through the forum fairly regularly as of late- so I figured I’d sign up! I ended up with two nice tractors this last weekend, so of course I’ve been tinkering with them every spare moment I have. My dad gave me the family tractor now that I have my own place, a nice 53 WD with a New Idea loader. And I picked up a 50 CA along with a planter, cultivator , and 3 bottom plow for the WD (only paid 950$ for the whole shootin match !!) They’ll work quite nice on the hobby farm my wife and I have here in Mauston WI. Anyway, I’m sure as my adventure continues I’ll have way more questions then I already do (for example : is my CA supposed to have a gasket on the air cleaner cup ?) Thanks for all the info that I’ve already picked up from this forum and thanks for all the future help in advance!! -John

I have a service manual that I skimmed through, and it didn't mention any gasket between the bowl and the air cleaner assembly. The latches are quite lose , which is what lead me to think there would be a gasket. The bowl has a tendency to fall off while I'm operating it, and I'd like to refrain from running it so much without oil in the cleaner.

Is there a way I can tighten the clips on the bowl then ? Like I said above - the bowl falls off once and awhile and I'd like to get that squared away before I start using it more, or before I lose the bowl in a field somewhere

Humm. Bowl falling off is not a good thing. The WD series does have a gasket. I would think these would too. But there are many guys that have these tractors, and I do not. Oil slopping around and leaking out would not be a great thing either. The WD series has the gasket up in the upper portion of the air box (tube). Small and thin but its there. Biggest thing is not loosing the cup and or running over it. Maybe the latches can be adjusted? Your going to have some shining to do on those 3 bottoms. I assume that are 14 inch bottoms. Have you plowed with those in the past? What a nice gift from your Dad. You now have a "family" tractor" priceless! Regards, Chris

Thanks ! I've used a disc but not a plow. I took it out yesterday (most just playing around in the garden) and I didn't work to well  I think your right and I need to shine up the blades. I also think I need to adjust the depth ? It doesn't raise up as high as I'd think it would, and it sure didn't dig to deep (before getting clogged) My grandfather got that WD in the early 60s and its been in the family ever since. She's a faithful old girl and has always worked like a champ

Depending on the ground and conditions of the ground. The Wd might have a tough time pulling the 3 bottoms. As noted "your mileage may vary" Guys will come on an tell you they have no problems with the WD pulling those. Maybe in loose dry ground with them moldboards clean it might be good. That's why I was asking if you had used that tractor and plow combination on the farm? Great that your getting out testing the tractor and implements! You provided good pictures! Regards, Chris

Another new guy with a ca and hobby farm? Great! Cool that you have family tractors to use. This is a great site with an unbelievable amount of knowledge. What all do you have on the "farm"? We have a few milk goats, chickens, rabbit, and like to mess around with permaculture in relation to the animals, garden, and landscaping.

Thanks Jared ! At the moment we only have some laying hens, though we're getting about 30 meat birds at the end of the month, along with some beef cattle. My wife has a lead on some free horses, so knowing her we'll have a few of those as well here soon enough. When we bought the farm, it came with a old New Holland 270 baler that I got running last night. We have about 5 acres of hay at the moment, so the plan is to get a rake and old New Idea Sickle Mower from my father-in-law and put our own hay up this year. I also plan on doing about 2 acres of Sweet Corn for sale (which that planter will come in handy for)

I was going by the parts manual on the gasket, you might "tweek" the clips a bit with needle nose pliers to get a better bite.

Looking at that parts breakdown, it seems that one of my clips is broken. That's probably what my issue is. Do you think it would hurt if I made a gasket to act as a shim almost, to put more tension on the clips ? Or I could probably try bending the broken clip so it puts more pressure on the cup.

Hey Don , What do you mean by that? I compared the picture you posted to the one I posted above - couldn’t see a difference. I was playing with the adjustments today (prior to the lightning) and I think the turn handle on top is what I need to adjust

SGTJ, The links from the plow to the tractor need to be turned inside out on yours. Not sure how to say it? Maybe I can find some old photo bucket pictures of my plow? This will shorten the link system.

I’m not a smart man Jenny .... but I’m not tracking. Looking at the pictures you posted, my plow is hooked up the same way.unless there’s something obvious that I’m over looking?
What specifically do I need to flip around ??

The hinged support system has a knuckle in it and it flips around. remove your vertical lift arm and let it hang down. grab hold of the bottom and move it out to the side and fold it over the horizontal big found support bar. I Probably am not explaining well. Maybe I have another picture?
There is a joint at the lower end of your support rods (adjustable arms) that I believe can rotate 180 and the adjusting portion then comes up and around that part. Still doesn't sound right when I am saying it.

SG, Ok even better look at your plow picture. See the arms hanging down. Instead of rotating the arms towards the tires, rotate them to the right and left (outward and upward). Play with it and I think you will see what we mean. Sorry not being able to describe it better. Regards, Chris
