We have a series I, bar grill, D17 with the power steering pump on the distributor drive. The power steering was working intermittently an now it has quit completely.
The fluid level in the front bolster is good, we unscrewed what we assume is the high pressure line and it had fluid in it, cranked it over and it shot fluid out of the pump. Put it back together started it up but no power steering. Then we took the chain hoist a lifted the front end enough to take the weight off. It turned smooth and easily from lock to lock and occasionally the power steering tried to kick in. Could the key have sheared in the drive gear in the pump? Any suggestion where to go next?

Could be just a worn out pump. Just because it shot out oil don't mean it will pump enough pressure to steer. MACK

Dad bought a new D17 in 1959 with a mounted #17 picker. When he took it to the local mechanic for something, they fixed the power steering. It never had the key in it from the factory. Dad never knew it had power steering. Good luck with your repair.

So if the pump is worn out is there an alternative to finding a used pump to replace it?

I mounted a E gleaner pump on mine. Used bracket like series 3-4 D17. MACK

So a Gleaner E or a later D17. Would a D19 pump work?

A D19 pump would work if you can find one. They are as hard to find as D17 is why I used the E pump, I had it.
Go to Surplus Center, they have a lot of pumps that could be mounted. It will have to be a pump with a built in relief valve of a relief valve in line. MACK |

Got one in the shop right now acting like the original posters is. it has a belt driven pump though. If I need to replace it what does the relief pressure need to be set at?

Thanks for the info. So if I plumb a "T" on one of the pressure fittings and screw a gauge into it and turn the wheel to the stop on either side that should give me bypass pressure. Finding that T might be the next big ordeal.
