    Posted: 10 May 2012 at 4:30am
Guys:  Has anyone here used a 226 power unit engine in a D17 Series IV tractor.

Any modifications to contend with, I am assuming the power unit is a direct bolt in replacement, but have not done this conversion.

Any comments or thoughts would be great.  Thank-you...Orangeman

PS - Is the radiator in the power unit the same as in the D17 tractor?  Reason I ask is that some of the smaller AC power units like the 149 the radiators are not the same as in the tractor.

The rad in my g226 power unit is not the same rad as a 17, and as for putting the engine  in a 17 I dont know why it wouldnt work, but I would think if you had a g226 power unit  you should be able to sell it and make enough to put a little cash in your pocket and  buy a gleaner E engine to put in your 17

It needs to be a G-226 power unit,  not a W-226 power unit.

Hello Dr.  Allis: Can you give me some tip on the difference between the G and W 226 power unit models.

Thank-you Orangeman

W-226 is commonly used in the WD45 application. The G226 was first used in the D17 application and later on the 170-175 and E and E3 Gleaner combines.  Look at the serial number behind the carb air inlet hose stamped on the block. If it says 45- XXXXXXX it's a WD45 engine. If it says 17-XXXXXX it's a D17 engine. There are also several other ways to ID which one it is.

Ok guys I did positively identify that it is a W-226 power unit as it starts with 45 xxxxx on the block.

Question - Can the W-226 go into a WC tractor without mods?

Thank you for any comments or help.  Orangeman

Are you saying a W226 engine won't bolt up in place of a G226? I always thought you could bolt a 17 engine in a WC and visa versa.

As far as bolting in, both G and W 226 engines are the same. The G 226 has a rib cast into the block on both sides just above the oil pan and also has 3" mains instead of 2.5" so is a more robust engine.
Nothing is impossible if it is properly financed

Calvin and Charlie:  Thanks for the info.   That is quite a jump from 2.5 to 3" mains.

We have a few WC around our area that could use a donor engine, so was thinking the W-226 could go in place of the old WC engine.

When did Allis start to equip the 226 block with a Dry element air cleaner?
