The crack between the cylinders I have seen before but it extends through the very top 1/8 inch of the sleeve also. It is just in the very top beveled 1/8th of the sleeve. Will it leak here? Can it be shut with a mig or tig in place? Leave it? Replace the sleeve? The piston and the rings stop well below this. Thanks for the info ahead of time. Dana

Looks to me like it would eventually leak. But if you put a new sleeve in it what is there to say it won't crack again. If it was mine I would take a serious look at the block.

I think what I'm seein' (the LH sleeve cracked at 12:00) is what ML is seeing... check-see if that sleeve is cracked too.
The fracture in the deck isn't a big deal, apparently it was nature of the beast, and the seal between sleeves and head is still intact and fine... BUT... my WD's block had been frozen and repaired, and the webbing down below is cracked, so no matter what I do with sleeves, they won't seal on account of the block 'opening' up and leaving a gap around the sleeves. if your webbing (down below the deck) is still intact, I'd say stuff in a new pair of sleeves, pistons, and rings and fire it up. |

D15 II has very thin sleeves anyway so it makes all the more reason to change it, you don't want to trash the rest of the engine trying to take a shortcut. 160 CI engines are expensive to fix as it is, I certainly would not tempt fate and end up doing the job over again.

ML what does decked mean? I see that mark and next time I go over to where the tractor is I will check it out. I remember seeing some mark there but it was I think smooth and a non issue but I will check. Thanks, Dana

He means having the head gasket surface of the block machined so it's flat. Cracks between the tops of the sleeves will be sealed by the head gasket. Obvious the one sleeve is cracked and no good. The pits in the other one make it unuseable too.

Brian covered it but I will respond to . Your asking the steel fire ring in the gasket to do allot when you have gouges pits or cracks in the sleeves top flange that the gaskets fire ring sets on. the steel ring in the gasket needs to be on a flat surface to bite into or compression will go right under it through the pits gouges etc.

So if you "Deck" the block, would't you need to take the same amount off the top of all the sleeves?

You can take it from the sleeves, or recut the counter bores the sleeve flanges sit in. I'd be more inclined to cut the bores to insure the sleeves set perfectly perpendicular to the crank. |

It doesn't look as though the deck or sleeves have been cleaned up so I wonder if the black on the sleeve to the left has a flaw or has some kind of fly crap on it.

160 parts are spendy, if your interested I have a set of used sleeves out of a 160, I could fix you up with a couple. I put a new set of sleeves and pistons in an Industrial 60 a year ago last winter, I dont throw nothin away.
