Im working on a 180 ALLIS  the injector pump was suppossedly rebuilt not to long ago , only had a tank of fuel thru it ; guy said it runs like crap, starts hard , smokes like a train , runs hot , etc; I started to mess with it , timing it up , had the injector pump marks in the timing window perfect dead on , looked on the crank pulley it was at 23 ; need to be at 26 ; turned it to 26 mark still dead on in the timing window on the pump ; , turned it to 30; injector pump marks still dead on , at 31 the marks in the injector pump window started to move ; you can turn it from 23 to 30 and the injector pump marks are lined up perfect , so it has 7 degress of slop somewhere ; coulldnt this be the problem ? All the others I,ve messed with you turn the pulley on the crank ,the timing window marks move ; anyone run into this before ? Where to start ? Timing gear, key in the pump shaft ? Thanks !!!!

Is the spring loaded thrust button in the front of the driveshaft? The idler could have failed, but not too likely. Does this pump have an advance? If so, the cam screw could have broke, or come out. Do the two marks move up or down together in the window? The rear mark(cam ring) should never move while timing the pump, it will move once the advance piston starts moving it(if equipped). You MUST rotate the engine the way it normally rotates to keep the backlash out of the gear train. You cannot turn it backwards to "fine-tune" the crank pulley. If you do have to back it up, rotate backwards 20 or 30 degrees and then try it again. The hard starting may not have anything to do with timing (possible cranking compression issue)....advancing timing makes it start harder, but may clear up smoke and make it run better. You can set it as high as 28 degrees because that's what a straight 190 was at, but it will start even harder at 28 than 24. I had a 190 one time that another dealer had overhauled and had the pistons installed backwards, positioning the offset bowl in the wrong place for the injectors to spray.
