Tear down has begun after many repairs...and continued repairs as I get further into it. Replaced the brakes, brake drum, pinion seals, axle seal, bull gear gaskets and oil. Pulled the pump yesterday to send to Ed for a rebuild. I’ve repaired a lot of stuff on the ole girl, finally starting to prep for paint. Steve has repaired my generator, built a new wiring harness, and I rebuilt the PS pump, replaced seals in the front support. Also removed the oil filter housing the drill out the drain that was broken off, tapped and replaced the plug. At least I won’t have a mess when I change the oil. Trying to get as leak free as possible lol. Will update in a few weeks.

Before pic after the brake job. This is my starting point, with the wrong head lights, shroud and grill. It’s a 59’ 3 bar grill tractor originally.

I actually like the WD headlights on it versus the D17 bug eye lights. I will see how it looks with big lights first, I like originality but It will be what looks best including color IMO.

Early Series 1s like yours came with the 4 3/4" headlights - same size as the WD/45, D14.  I think it was late 1960 (when the D15 came out) that they went to the larger headlights up front - which look too big in my opinion.  The ones you have on it now appear to be correct.

These 59’ models are kinda confusing. In some photos you see the big lights, others the WD size. I bought a really nice 59’ diesel shroud, 3 bar grill and head lights from a forum member who parted his tractor out. It has the big lights, so go figure, I may stick to the smaller lights as I agree look better. Maybe his was at end of series 1 that got the newer lights? Who knows?

Steve, now you can see why I needed a wiring harness! Can’t wait until I get to that point when I can finally put your nice harness on. A lot of work to go before that.

Found it odd that after draining the tank of fuel, I removed the petcock assembly so I could get the remaking fuel out. 2 more gallons came out. I’m going to reinstall it tomorrow and look in the tank to verify the stub sticks through the tank that far. That’s a lot of unused fuel, it may have been replaced at some point with the incorrect one. Will see if the manual has a picture of it in the parts section.

The wiring on my uncle's 706 looks much like that! I just shutter when I see it. Seems to work for him but would drive me nuts!

Mike it’s actually D17 24587D so it’s newer than I thought! Lol, by 50 tractors. Just wire wheeled the paint off the stamp.

Made a few small repairs today and removed the floor boards and associated parts. Didn’t get to spend a lot of time on it. Took the hydraulic and transmission vents/fluid level apart to clean them. It’s stripped down as far as it needs to go mechanically. Now the fun begins, removing the scaling paint and prepping it for paint.

Exciting day for me. I was able to borrow a friends blasting cabinet to do my sheet metal! I can’t tell you how good it felt not to be covered in sand. I usually do this chore outside in full gear and still wind up with sand all over me. I didn’t miss the respirator fogging up my safety glasses under the hood. That stuff gets in somehow under the suit. Completed both fenders, battery box, dash, grill shroud, middle hood brace, and a few other small items in less than 2 hours. 1 hood is half done. Will finish up in the morning.

70229915 are the headlites for older models on the radiator D15/17 .      70257718 are the fender mounted head lights D15/17.  There were never two sizes for the radiator lights from the factory.

Robbie, that's a huge blast cabinet. I've got a Texas barrel blaster. That fender would not fit in,lol. But its nice when you can do it yourself.

Finished blasting my sheet metal, fuel tank and various parts today. Have some rust damage and dents to repair. Amazing how old paint covers up damage not seen before. I’ve got a lot to do. Trying a product called Metal to Metal to fill in rust pits.

Since the wiring was a thrown together mess I decided to take the pre heat chamber off to inspect the pre heater since it didn’t appear to be working when I bought the tractor. I wanted to prove that it was functional before I painted the tractor. It does in fact work, interesting grid design versus the plug of the later models. I have no idea how many amps it draws but it must be quite a few by the amount of sparks when I touched it to the battery!

Dr Allis, I pulled the part numbers a few months ago when I first started finding some miss matched parts on this 59’ diesel. Mainly the shroud and grill. After purchasing a nice used shroud, grill, head light assembly that’s when I began to question the headlights. The new to me shroud, 3 bar grill, headlights came from a 59’ diesel being parted out from a forum member. So I feel they are correct but I wanted to verify the head lights. Unfortunately AGCO doesn’t give a size of the headlight bucket. The part numbers you posted are the same I came up with. I have not pursued a AGCO dealer yet to see if anyone has one in stock to get me a measurement yet. My guess would be the larger light but would like confirmation of the size. So far the shroud, grill, headlights are the only items that I have found not to be correct on the ole girl. The shroud and grill was damaged from the use of a loader that used to be on the tractor. Apparently something fell out of the loader and hit the grill/ shroud. I was informed of that a few months after I purchased it.
