I bought a nice and straight D17 Series III gas this summer. It strange because in the dash it has the "diesel starting aid" pull knob and the cable feeds through and is cut off at the rear of the motor sitting there. The choke knob is on the left sidepanel. It starts with the keyswitch and doesn't have a push button to start. Other than that everything looks factory but I'm not a D17 expert. I'm curious about this.

A D-17 diesel chassis is 2 3/4" longer than the 4-cylinder gas. That means both hoods and the center hood are longer, as are the side frames. The clutch shaft is longer on a gasser and the diesel clutch shaft then is shorter. I cannot explain why you see what you see, but to "convert" one over really isn't feasible. When diesels are converted to gas, the gas engine of choice is a 6-cylinder G-230 or G-262 out of a Gleaner combine, not a 4-cylinder like a D-17 normally has.

Thanks, I guess that's not why then.
The book shows the choke cable coming from this knob in the console, but mine's on the sidepanel. I've seen pictures the choke on the sidepanel like mine. Did Allis change the choke location at some point?

All series 4's were a cable thru the instrument panel. Maybe some of the late S-3's were too.

Series 3 and 4 had the choke cable in the dash. Remember, the tractor is 60 years old now - a lot can happen to it over those years. Sounds like yours was subject to some "farmer fixes" - improvised wiring, carb replaced with an older one which used the choke rod. I've seen many of these "modifications".

Series 3 was side panel choke control from s/n 42001 up to s/n 68,500. From 68,500 and up and thru all the series 4's were cable in the dash.

If Your tractor was a factory diesel, the last digit of the serial number on the torque tube/bell housing should be a D. Mine was a diesel converted to a 262 gas. I don't believe the 4 cylinder would work without changing frame rails or modifying the mounts.

Mine's 43320 so sounds like mine should have the side choke. Interesting what has been done to these things.
