When doing manifold gaskets on a 226 do you dress the metal sides of the gaskets with anything? On the head do you buff it with a 3m wheel or any other cleaning prep? Sorry for the dumb questions.

'dress' gasket...no
head prep ?.. yes, 'buff' it AND manifold shiny and smooth.
I take a known GOOD straight edge and place on both.If light shows through ,take a LITTLE material from around the light...with a wide ,fine file. The idea is to have a very flat,true surface. Spending an extra hour or so now will pay off big time later.

Thanks, the manifold is headed to get plained. I will use a 3m wheel on the head.

Re-torque manifold nuts every morning when COLD for several days until the nuts quit moving.

Those 3M Roloc discs are the devil's handiwork on engine work. They remove metal and leave aluminum oxide grit behind. That grit is fine enough that an oil filter will not remove it from the oil and cause damage to the oil pump and bearings. These things are bad enough that GM issued a bulletin on not using them inside any engine and every engine returned to the warranty parts center is tested for the presence of aluminum oxide in the oil and if found warranty claims will be rejected. A far superior method is using a scraper with a carbide edge. I have all 3 widths of the Super Scraper. With the machined carbide edge it will even cut through a rust layer on a cylinder deck and head. You do have to be careful on aluminum. I found out about the Super Scraper when I was doing 6.0 Powerstroke head gaskets under warranty frequently. It will clean down to the machine pattern on any block or head. They're not very expensive either. They are about $25 each and will be the last scraper you will buy. If it ever does need to be sharpened, they will resharpen them for free.

Some good pointers for sure, Thanks. Now another question, a 170 at 4500 hours , 500 of which I have put on it, runs fine but was thinking about checking valve clearances while the hood is off. I hate to do so for one reason only, the valve cover doesn't leak a bit. I did this to my 190, and have not been able to get the valve cover gasket to hold in three reseal attempts.

Use generous amounts of Indian Head gasket glue, and it will not leak.
