D-17 series IV spline brake hub

Does anybody know how to remove the spline brake hub from the bull pinion shaft? There is a wire snap ring inside the hub that doesn't want to come out and thinking about just heating and pulling the hub off the shaft hoping the snap ring will collapse enough to let the hub loose. The IT book says remove(pull) hub, then woodruff key, then snap ring.Angry

Series IV brake hubs should slide off the axle shaft with not much force. A little wire brush action. The key is in earlier models with a solid drum.

Series 3 and 4 have a splined hub that is pressed on the axle shaft. I don't ever remember having to remove/replace one. It will take a puller or heat or both.

I thought series I and II were pressed on?

Series 1 and 2 had the brake drum pressed on. Different design of brakes.

the splined hub on a Series IV is a loose fit on the splined shaft.  It is supposed to be able to move on the shaft a little as the brake discs wear.  Yours may be rusted, there is no snap ring or half moon key on a Series IV.    Worst comes to worst you may have to pop the springs holding the drum halves together and separate the splined half from the open half-not a fun job.    Ive done lots of them, never had a problem removing the drum from the shaft, always a new wrinkle somewhere.  Now the pin that holds the two bands in place is an altogether different story.

Unless I've lost my marbles, the 180-185's had the brake drum splined directly to the axle shaft. The D-17 3 and 4 used a different drum on the splined hub that was keyed to the axle shaft, yes??

No,  the brakes in a Series IV are the same design as a 180 or 185.  On all those tractors the final drives are outboard-hence the same direct splined axle setup.   D19s and 190s and 200s have the brakes splined to the pinion shaft as they  all had internal final drives.  Been a long time but I think the brake discs are the same part number for series IV and 180/185.    HTH.

Brake disc linings are the same from D-17 3-4 170-175-180-185. Better look on AGCOPARTSBOOKS.com. The brake drum is different, as is the axle shaft. My theory is the 180-185's wouldn't have survived with the half-moon key cut in the axle shaft, so they eliminated it. The lower HP tractors still used a key and then a splined hub to a different brake drum.

Agco parts: lineing for D17IV-237421,  Lineing for 180/185-237421.  The outer drum is the same P/N, the splined drum is a diff part number.   There is a splined adapter that is keyed to the axle shaft that the inner drum sits on.  And the brake bands are 235610 on all those tractors.

I'm referring to the retaining ring(p/n:70230330)for the brake hub(p/n:70237219) that I can't remove.

Looks as if you could appy some heat to the hub and slide it one way or the other, then take the snap ring off.  Heating  the snap ring will probably ruin it- might have to do that. I think the IT book is referering to the brake drum on early D17s.  I remember the AC D17 service book didnt cover Series IV brakes,  Id go the 170 book for that info.   Maybe later D17 serv books had those brakes in it, mine did not.  Good luck
