Topic: D17 series 1 pinion shaft/bearing removalPosted: 12 Aug 2021 at 3:48pm |

The rear output shaft on my D17 seized up. I’ve removed everything on the rear to get to the output shaft, but can’t figure out how to get it out from there. It appears from some parts breakdowns I found that there is a nut on the inside back wall of the transmission that has to back off first before that half shaft will come out. Is that it or am I missing something else?
Thanks in advance for any advice. |

You have the lift arm housing and both axles pulled off ?? and the differential removed ?? Then, shift the transmission into second gear and remove the shift cover. Remove the bolts that are around the pinion gear bearing on the backside so it can be moved rearward. There is a snap-ring on the front of the pinion shaft that can be removed in chassis and if you're lucky you might be able to drive things to the rear slowly and catch the pieces as you go. I did one WD45 like this. With this snap ring removed each and every part slides off of that pinion shaft (main shaft) one by one. Technically you are supposed to split the tractor at the dashboard and remove the input shaft first and then drive out the pinion shaft. Also, be sure to replace the PTO shaft seal and Oring. That's why it was low on oil and locked up to begin with.

Thank you for the response good Dr. Yes, I have everything removed including the ring on the backside of the pinion bearing and the shift tower. I think the lock ring might be behind the nut I mentioned? I can see threads on the front side of the shaft and a round nut with a couple notches on it. Then I think there is a ring with some flaps on it and the lock ring.
I was hoping to be able to cut a few steps out and not have to keep splitting, but might have to go that route to get room. I don’t know how to post a picture on here but I’ve been using agcopartsbook website to see what’s what. Definitely planning on fixing the PTO seal. I knew it was leaking but loaned it out with instructions to make sure to check the oil. Should have known better. |

The lock ring nut isn't messed with until after you pull the whole shaft out.

Ok. Sorry if I’m being dense here, but I’m not seeing another lock ring to remove beside the one behind that nut. Should the shaft pull out as is except for the part where it’s seized in the bearing? I’m not sure how to drive it out. There doesn’t look to be any way to pull it and nothing I can hit to drive it out that’s not cast.

Split the tractor. Remove the Power Director clutch. Remove the input shaft. Remove the snap ring I talked about. Drive the 12 inch long pinion shaft out the back. Catch all the parts, especially the 6 little pins inside the gear bushings. |
