    Posted: 29 Mar 2022 at 7:01pm

 I had been seeing them commercials on doing some aluminum welding with that special weld rod that Harbor Freight sells,,,so I thought ,,,What The Heck,,,and bought a pkg of i think,,6 rods bout 14" long. I had a Pierce 12,000 Winch that a friend had given me 2 years ago and it had one of the end plates had a chunk broke off and the other end had also  cracked. I took the pieces to 2 welders in town and they both wanted OVER $250 to repair and I figured I would try the HF rod once and if it did not work,,I would bite the bullet and have a real welder do the repairs.....Wink
 I Watched a couple of videos and biggest issue is to get the parent metal up to 725° BEFORE you apply the rod to the parent metal and let the parent metal melt the rod and use the rod to "move" the liquid aluminum as you add more aluminum to the puddle. After a couple of tries on a piece of junk aluminum,,,I took a slug of Jack Daniels and fired the torch up,,,,,LOL One of the videos had them using them small green propane bottles for heat source but I never could get it hot enough so I used my Propane/ Oxy torch ,,,,Clap I will tell you WHAT,,,,that stuff works slicker than owl chit,,I was amazed !! The literature even says you can use this rod on pot metal,,,Pot metal, even dis=similar metals,,, It really works great,,!!!Clap

Joe, is it actually welding, or is it more like brazing or soldering?
I am still confident of this;

 Aw Chit,,,you caught me ,,,Lou,,,,!!  You sure did,,LOL
 Naw,,I wasn't trying to fool no one,,just sometimes my mouth don't say what my brain is thinking,,,,annd my typing fingers don't pay no attention to either of them,,,,,LOLLOL
 Yes,,it is just soldering and it is the best'est I've ever seen and biggest issue is getting the parent metal hot enough (725°) If you try to melt the aluminum rod onto the weld,,and the parent metal ain't hot enough,,the rod just runs off your work and makes a mess. I went back to HF and bought another two bunches,,,you know,,,to make sure I gots some IF I need to,,,,,LOL
 Fact is,,I'ma gonna try to "weld" some pot metal,,,brochure says it will,,,!!

Can you "weld" "solder" "braze" them ole lawn chairs with the stuff??
Do you HAFTA us JD with it?  Is that for a cooling effect??  Or is it a flux??  Hehehe.....

That’s good to know, I’ve watched some videos by Muggy Weld but didn’t want to go through the hassle of ordering the stuff and of course the lot size is 20 times more than I want, especially if it doesn’t work.  Next time I’m in HF I’ll pick some up.
