Hi guys, new to the forum and extremely happy to join. Looking for opinions from like minded Allis individuals and farmers. I use my 52 Wd, that I picked up with new rear tires and both the wide and narrow front ends for $800 last year, for moderate work such as tedding, raking, 2 bottom trailer plowing, spreading some sheep manure on the corn field and soon some square baling. I'm a fan of the narrow front on a vintage tractor, have been since being a small tot driving our 52 Super M loading tobacco, hay, and harrowing pasture. Would it be worth my time to pull the wide front and replace with the narrow?

It is nice having the wide front to clear the windrow of hay but unless you are doing loader work, it's not really necessary.  I think the NF turns a tick bit tighter if that is important.

Its all just a matter of what you like,but if you're going to do things like push snow the
NF won't work very well.

I have never had a  problem pushing snow with a narrow front.

Been there, done that. I used to just have a rear blade. I have plowed snow till it piled up under the engine and was nearly to the front wheels. Stopped, raised the blade and backed out. Fluid in the rears and cross over chains lets me go just about anywhere I want to. And with a narrow front end sometimes I don't even have to turn the steering wheel turn turn Wink

Changing the front over would be a several day job. Getting the bolts out of the casting is sometimes the hardest part! I like both the wide and the narrow. We have two NF and a Wide front too.

If you have the tricycle front which bolts on that front housing,it's not that big of job changing over.Uncle put the narrow front on his 45 every year to mount the picker.

I preferred the tricycle for cultivating row crops. Always felt like I ran over fewer plants. But now that I don't row crop I like the wide best.

You already know what a NF is like. Use it as-is for 6 months and then make up your mind. For me, it's a no-brainer....WIDE FRONT !!!

You have a tractor that looks a lot like the two that I brought home a couple years ago. After 60+ years they get a good crust on them!:) Thanks for posting the pictures. What are your plans for the WD?

Chris, I plan on giving the WD a complete restoration when she is ready to retire.......not sure when that will be though since she likes to work the fields. But for now, I am going to keep adding parts as I come across them. I have a new (used) hand clutch lever on the way since the previous owner had cut it down to about the same straight height of a Case SC hand clutch.

 Never heard of someone cutting the hand clutch handle off! Is it still fairly easy to operate??
The restoration process is fun and the results are satisfying. I vote for the narrow front end because it looks like that's what it had under it from the factory???
Also if this is to be your puller then most of the pullers are narrow front.

Had a narrow front, switched to a wide front . Enjoy the wide front.

Just remember you can park more tractors in the shed if they are narrow front.........just saying. Thumbs Up

Chris, as far as I know, it came with the NF from the factory on this particular tractor and the previous owner changed or had it changed out, luckily he kept the NF so now I have both. The hand clutch functions properly but I'm just not enthused with the straight lever that they cut it down to, I like the originality of the AC crooked lever. Darnedest thing too, it doesn't have the actual WD motor, I did some research awhile back and the motor is a WD45 engine. So I've got the power of a 45 with a WD tranny/rear end. Of course it doesn't hurt my feelings since our Super M's rear end is actually a 49 M's rear end due to my uncle wrapping it around a tree after spreading fertilizer back in the 80s. So we have a few pieced together farm tractors on the farm.
