all my questions what is this assembly called? It's behind the engine and below the dash ahead of the 'firewall'. Solenoid? If so what is the small round thing sitting atop of the starter?

I believe thats the solonoid for the manifold air heater.   When you turn the key switch to "heat" you hear a click (or should hear a click"), the click is the solonoid activating the air heater grid in the intake manifold.   HTH
