@Hunter321; Was the piece under the battery itself or under the battery box?

@hunter321; Wow! This has been a while. You must be a busy beaver LOL. I'm not an expert but I think that is the retaining ring off of the back of the hand clutch. I don't know if this means the hand clutch needs rebuilt/replaced or if you can run it OK with everything assembled. Did you ever get this old girl going?

6 volt system has to be PERFECT to get it to go.... Could be starter , battery, cables, ground strap....... 12 volts is more forgiving and will spin it over better, thats why many convert over to 12v.

that would be worth a try to show that the starter is OK, and you have a weak battery or poor cables.

I would not just throw in a 12 volt battery.
It would be bad for your coil, and charging system and lights.
We need a bunch of photos, you should post some if you can.
We could see how stock it is and what not.

I would be willing to speak to you on the phone or Private Messenger (a feature of the forum). I sent you a PM.

Try an 8 volt battery. It will work fine in place of a 6 volt, and nothing else will not have to be changed.

Lift the hot wire off the coil and the generator... Crank with 12 v....If that works, you can set the 6 volt battery below the tractor and run a jumper wire from it, to the coil, and ground the other side of the battery to the frame... then crank with 12 volts, and use the 6v to check for spark / ignition.

Nice !!! Some day, you will look back at your journal and appreciate all the effort it took to keep track of everything and the time you spent with your Dad working on this.

Good luck. I wish you lived close by so I could help.

---click on "post reply" button on the lower left side of screen below the last post
---click on the "green tree" button in the new box that opens up
--click on the " choose file " button on the left lower side of the next box that opens
--find the photo you want on your computer you want to upload and select it
--------- photo can in on desktop, or in a seperate file
---click on the "upload" button below the "choose button

---look at the size of the photo... make it about 800 x 600 pixels
---click on the "OK" button on the lower right side to install that photo.
---click on the post button to post your photo

replace the battery cables with new ones, big, fat , like welding cables NOT skimpy '12V car' cables
charge/check 6v battery ( be sure acid level is good !)

I 'cheated', went pseudo12 volt.

there really is not much to CONVERT... With a 12 volt battery, the system is happy. You should replace a 12 volt coil... point / plug/ etc are all OK..... Dont worry about the generator... it may go ahead and charge the 12 volt battery... or lift the wire and forget it. Use it to adjust belt tension only... Put the battery on a little bench charger every 10 times you start it....... Dont need lights..

Old 6 volt systems can have weak starters, weak batteries, bad battery cables, not well grounded... EVERYTHING has to be PERFECT for a 6 v system.... as you have proven.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.
