The cylinders are two-way and are only being used as one-way. There is a leak in the plunger.

What do I do. The plug has a hole that looks like it was drilled |

No, the hole in the plug is to allow air in and out as the piston moves. The leak is in the seals around the piston inside the cylinder. The seals are leaking oil into the space that should only have air in it.

Hunter, when you pump oil in the bottom of the cylinder and push the piston up, the AIR in the other end has to get out of the cylinder... and when you drop the boom and the oil runs back out, the air has to reenter the top of the cylinder..
The PISTON inside has rubber SEALS to keep it from leaking from the bottom to the top.. Yours are BAD... so the oil leaks past the seal and then runs out the AIR VENT. |

You have to take the HEAD off the cylinder and pull out the ROD so you can see the PISTON... then replace the seals... You can buy a KIT to replace... Type and size of seals depends on what cylinder it is.

this is how you do it.......... you need to know WHAT the cylinder size is.... Or take it apart and measure the PISTON diameter... could be 2.5 inch , or a little bigger or smaller.

you measure the OUTSIDE of the piston.. the BIGGEST diameter... or the BORE ( inside of the pipe) that is the cylinder......... Just like doing the motor pistons / liners.

i would say it is a 2-1/2 inch piston... Since you have it apart, you can see what kind of packing it takes.. Some used 3-4 rings of a VEE shaped packing laying on top of each other .... Some use something that looks like thick and think plastic and rubber rings ( square cross section) that stack on top of each other..... Some kits you buy are "universal" and will have 6-7 different rings and you might only need 4-5 of them... should also be a oil seal or WIPER on the head that keeps dirt from going down the rod into the top end of the cylinder.
You might want to check calibration on your mike.. The other day you measured the MOTOR PISTON as 3.460 ....... or about 40 thousands under 3-1/2 inch ..... today you measured the hydraulic cylinder piston as 2.460 ... or about 40 thousands under 2-1/2 inch.

I will. I measured 4 or 5 times for both
The engine piston is not much bigger than the cylinder piston |

good plan.
your MOTOR pistons should measure more like 3.496 ..(3-1/2 inch)........... not 3.46 you hydraulic piston should measure more like 2.496 ....( 2-1/2 inch).......... not 2.46

If you know who made the cylinder, you can GOOGLE that.. If not, then you normally buy a "GENERIC" 2.5 inch cylinder kit and use the pieces that you need.. You can compare the picture to the "PARTS" on your cylinder...

be 100% sure the 'seal kit' is rated for the hydraulic pressure that YOUR pump generates ! My D-14 is 3500PSI and 1000PSI seals will NOT last too many times.........

I will take photos of the seals on now and compare them with others.
I think the set above should work. Need wiper seal Piston seals Piston rod o ring An both end cap seals |

"kits" are sold with a PISTON DIAMETER and ROD DIAMETER... You can find a 2-1/2 inch "KIT" that might have a 1- 1/2 inch rod, or a 1-1/4 inch rod ..... watch that.
