I was kinda leery bout getting in a close confins airplane but I guess I can do like ole Faucchi and double mask, too,,,,, I should have the natural Immunity now so maybe not a really big thing,, I'm hoping. My Son now lives just a few miles from Tallageda and he is hoping to get in some stock car racing,,,yee haw,,,,!!! I'ma be thinking bout you, Thad,,,,, Anyway, I been looking at getting a laptop as I don't like the tablet I used on last trip,,,it;s just too friggin small,,,! I been wondering which operating system is better,, windows 10 or the chromebook op system?? I think I was told that Chrome is a google product and I ain't wanting to give google any of my money because of their political views being opposite on mine!! I see a lot of Windows S operating systems,,,what is the S mean,,,?? |

About Windows 11 in S modeWindows 11 in S mode is a version of Windows 11 that's streamlined for security and performance, while providing a familiar Windows experience. To increase security, it allows only apps from the Microsoft Store, and requires Microsoft Edge for safe browsing. |

Given those choices, Windows 10, with Mozilla Firefox as the 'browser' and Mozilla Thunderbird for emails (same as this machine I'm using now.) All three have been 'stable', NO 'funny stuff' for years here. Problem is W11 is probably on new machines to buy... Question, What are you using now ?. Whatever laptop you buy, YOUR current operating system CAN be put on it. That means NOTHING new fangled to learn !!!! aw heck what do I know, only been in this game for 5 decades.....still have brand new, in box copies of Windows 3.11 |

My computer is several years old and running Windows 7... The Microsoft Internet browser was no longer supported in WIN 7 ( due to age) and i was having troubles a couple years back... Looked and read on line and everyone said GOOGLE CHROME was the best setup i could get... I am not a fan of the GOOGLE as a company ( politics), but CHROME works GREAT for me... and i paid them NOTHING... and never will.
It was a FAST download, retained all my Internet Browser data, and has run flawless for the past couple years. Edited by steve(ill) - 23 Mar 2022 at 8:48pm |

Well, I try to NOT use anything google FOR political reasons,,,,, My desktop has latest version of win10 and I like it as I know my way around it pretty much. I had wanted to look into a refurbished or gently used laptop and I see those for sale with Chrome OS outnumber the Win10 OS by a LARGE number and was wondering WHY? Way more that the mac ones. Maybe people ARE finally wanting to divulge themselves of political influence,,,???

maybe Google paid more than Microsoft to have their OS put on the computers.....? Flood the market, so to speak. In the good old days you bought a computer, then bought an Operating System, then some programs.. Nowadayze you get 'something' with 'preloaded' operating system and 'apps', probably 99.4% you'll never need or use. Look for a laptop WITH Windows10 on it, millions around. Check pawn shops, thrift stores, CList, used puter stores.

Im not supporting GOOGLE... But CHROME works great on a WIN 7 computer... That might be why MOST new computers have CHROME.... Microsoft is a good Operating System, but others might be better on the NET.

Nowdays, you get a computer preloaded with an operating system and software that is by 'subscription', so... if you don't pay for the subscription, they start disabling 'features' and 'software'. The Windows S, is basically Microsoft's way of preventing OTHER companies' software from running on your computer 'for your own safety'. If a guy wants a good basic computer, an operating system that won't rip him off, and a browser for the web, just install any one of a zillion Linux flavors, with Firefox, or any other browser. OpenOffice is free (and better than Microsoft Office), and there's no spying going on... Or stick with WIN7 and all the software you paid for and love...

Well, Dave,,that Linux sounds interesting,,,I'ma check it out,,,you don't got a copy I can barrie do you,,? You see,,I've had a big issue with MS as they have ruined two of my Desktops when they "forced" their "Updates" on "MY" computor after I bought and paid for their OS,,,!!! I will NOT use the Win10 "S" either! Can you tell I am Pissed?? (I currently use Firefox and DuckDuckGo) As a fact of the matter,,,I think I have a brand new, unused copy of Win7,,but I would rather get away from MS.

Hey Steve,,,I been checking several places for refurbished and used laptops for some time and my observations are that there are a lot MORE laptops with Google Chrome OS for sale than there are with Win10,,,,! Those with Win10 "S" ain't doing too swift either. So,,I'm wondering,,why are people getting rid of the chrome OS??

I have never run a computer with "CHROME" as the Operating system... I just use it as an "INTERNET SYSTEM".... When not on the NET, my computer is running Windows... Cant really comment on the CHROME as an OPERATING system.... Some people use the Computer 95% of the time for "internet access" , so at that point, what it has for an OPERATING system is probably moot. ??

In a nutshell... To make the 'computer' do stuff you need an 'Operating System', typically Windows or Linux for a PC. The 'OS' allows other programs (apps ) to access the hardware(CPU, harddrive, screen, mouse) To access the Internet you need a program(app) called a 'browser' (CHROME ,FIREFOX,Internet explorer, etc). This browser lets you type onto the web and see stuff from the web To access emails you need another program, Mozilla Thunderbird is one. Where it's become 'fuzzy' is that nowadays they combine a lot of these programs into one big program without telling anyone, thought we're all supposed to KNOW it..... GMAIL, is Googles version of email, but it's 'layered' or 'connected' to CHROME though Google and none of your emails are on YOUR computer. they get stored in a 'cloud' called Google/gmail which is really ,really scary if you're a techie like me. Kinda like having your tractor stored in neighbour's driveshed ...not a good idea.

I looked at Gmail for about an hour,PITA, so ... I have my Gmail accounts 'linked' to Mozilla Thunderbird ,so I never use Gmail. BTW EVERYBODY has info on you and your PC. 'Cookies' that they store on your puter contain info about you. EVERY website puts them there.... About every 3-4 months I go into Firefox and delete the unwanted ones. Only keep the important ones(online banking, here, etc) that way I don't have to reenter usernames, passwords and screens look normal.

If you're looking for something familiar and versatile, Windows 10 might be the way to go. It offers a wide range of software compatibility and customization options. As for Chromebooks, they're great for simplicity and speed, especially if you're heavily invested in Google's ecosystem. As for the Windows S operating system, the "S" stands for "Security" and it's a more streamlined version of Windows 10 designed for security and performance. It's worth considering if you prioritize these aspects. Oh, and if you do decide to go with Windows 10 and need a legit Windows key, I stumbled upon this site at https://digitalchillmart.com/product/windows-11-pro-32-64-bit/ where you can find affordable keys.
