I suspect that back when the plow was invented, it was an art to lay the furrow slice over against another one in such a manner as to have the grass, etc. covered with dirt and blended into the previously-laid slice. This "molding' was likely attributed to the Molding Board of the plow as it turned over the slice and pushed it into the previous one.

Just a thought...others may differ

Because if daddy didn't get the garden plowed and planted mom would feed him moldy food from last year on the picnic table outside.

A moldboard is the wedge formed by the curved part of a steel plow blade that turns the furrow.

not easy to pin down, but def #3 may explain it

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/mold

add "board" to make a compound word

even the 1st and 2nd defs could apply, as the "moldboard" does impart shape to the soil being plowed - UK: ploughed

John Deere was an early plow and the "board" was for the part and mold was what grew on it because the JD went so slow it grew mold .

The frog is a designer's term for a part that facilitates two or more different mechanical operations. A FROG on a violin bow for example joins the horsehair part to the backing rod in such a manner as to allow the horsehair part to be tightened or loosened by a threaded rod segment through the frog.
On a plow the FROG joins the Beam, the shares, moldboard, landside, etc. in such a manner as to allow the mechanical action of turning a slice of earth over after it is sheared by the plowshare, cut by the coulter or divider and turned by the moldboard.

I'm sure there are other examples of "FROGS" being used in designing machines of all types.

Ken McGregor

Grandma read it in a book and thought it sounded nice, so she made Creston my Dad's middle name, and he and my mom liked it so they named me that.

On the way to Hutch we went through my town in Iowa. Pretty neat seeing my name everywhere!
