190 should have a muffler under the hood. At least mine does. Straight pipe goes on top of my muffler

Eldon I bought a late 200 several years ago with a straight pipe and factory cab. Needed some work done on it, mechanic is about 13 miles away. Tractor had a muffler on it before I brought it home.

I think very late XTs had mufflers. The reason why mufflers were added is because noise levels were starting to be paid attention to.

Agco parts book shows muffler starting at engine number 2D-52301 for the 190XT. Wonder what year that equates to.

My late 1968 has none...straight pipe only. And I love it that way. Can you hear me now? lol, all kidding aside they are quite loud. The long pipe made it more barable vs say a shorter pipe. My brothers 1968XT has the factory cab, and it has a external round muffler!!!! Only 4 serial numbers off. Mine is 20346, his 20350. Probably built the same day and obviously went to the same dealer. We bought them both 49 years after production in the same area they were sold in. Tell me that isnt awesome! If you have never heard a 190 XT with a almost 4' long straight pipe mowing hay at 1,800 rpm you are missing out on some beautiful music.

Technically speaking, it is not a muffler on the 200.  It is a resonator according to Norm's book.  While it looks the same and serves the same purpose, I am just guessing that it would not be as restrictive as a muffler for air flow.  Just guessing though.

Yes, non turbo'd 190's had an under hood muffler.  Turbo'd engines had a straight pipe up to some point in time as mentioned above.

My Parts books show all had OEM mufflers.
190's gas & diesel serial #-19,000 and under shows #70243283 horizontal muffler under hood.
190XT & 200 early sn-4001, 210, 220 show #70253660 vertical. 40" length, 5" shell, 3" inlet & outlet.
190 turbo, 200 late, 7000 sn-8553 show #70271755 vertical. 48" length, 5 1/2" shell, 3" inlet & outlet.
I got my 200 in 1981, it had a 3" into 4" chrome stack on it. Bellowed with the best of them on a 5x16" plow or 18' disc in plowed ground. When I replaced turbo and valve cover gasket a few years later it got a muffler. The next time hood was off Case 1175 it got muffler also. Remember neighbor who was in his late 70's said to me ; Kid,You must be getting old putting mufflers on. He and his hired help ran a pair of bare back IH 1206's with straight pipes, and fueled so you could spot them by the black smoke. He had 2 hearing aids at the time, had to shout at him and look straight at him when talking.

Here's what I grew up listening to and why I have hearing aids today as dad didn't do hearing protection back then.
We got our first XT Series 3 in 69 when they first came out and it didn't have a muffler neither.
And we pulled 5x16's.
I'm thinking that one of our forum members posted this to you tube.
It's an XT plowing with a 6 bottom plow as they had "fine tuned" the tractor.

My 200 had a straight pipe with turbo. A retired AC dealer told
me always be sure to idle down the engine for a couple of minutes
to let the turbo cool. If not the hot turbo will burn the oil off the
bearings and cause a turbo replacement. Probably applies to 200's
with mufflers to.

The XT DIESEL did not have a muffler. The straight 190 diesel and the gas tractors had mufflers.

Like the last year they made them. That's a guess. You can add them to earlier models.

Let's address the original question and try and correct the misinformation on this post. The reason for the muffler was to reduce engine NOISE !!  The 200 got a pretty nice factory cab and it was time to help keep the noise decibels down as low as possible for the operator. The 200 had a 6 inch hole cut into the hood to accommodate this new muffler. Hood p/n of 70256268. There was never a 190 XT turbo diesel that had a muffler from the factory. None...zero...zip...nadda. I don't care what AGCO parts book says. There are plenty of mistakes on some of those since they went on-line. 190XT turbo diesel hood p/n is 70250680 and has a 3 1/2" hole in the hood.  Any 190XT with a muffler has been added on plain and simple and maybe even had a bigger hole cut in the hood by someone. A-C never had a small hood hole with a muffler body above the hood like an IH tractor.

Not related but my D21 had straight pipe,I cut out the hole and put a 220 muffler on it, would suspect the same thing on all the xt's with mufflers.

My 220 arrived with a straight pipe. That sucked! I cut a big oval in the hood and put a 7040 muffler on it.Saved the piece I cut out .....  That hood is not a piece of tin or sheet metal.Must be at least 11ga.Used a saber saw.Turns out,the fan ROAR is rediculas!

I added a muffler on the 190xt, later traded for 7000 because of ear ringing at night. After 39 years 7000 still working and has never had any troubles we could not fix at home.

s/n 19001 and up was when the hood sides were made longer downward. Like I said....the muffler listed for a turbo XT is WRONG.

I was thinking in the Allis book there is a picture of a 190 with Muffler. Maybe this was only in the prototype stage and they decided one was not needed.

I have mine to help with the noise level but my brothers does sound sweet with the straight pipe.
Do they make a straight with a inner baffle or something?

One-Ninety's gas and diesel after s/n 19001 and up had a MUFFLER above the hood. Previously they had a horizontal muffler underneath the hood. The tractor in question is the One-Ninety XT turbo diesel, which as I said, never had any kind of muffler.

Now I see the confusion. I am sure I have a sales brochure showing a muffler through the hood of an XT but I never looked to see if it was gas or diesel. I assumed all gassers and straight 190s had the muffler under the hood. Learned something new again.

The Doc (as usual) has it right. We had one of the very last 190XT III diesels built and it had a straight pipe. The first 200s were on the dealers lot and they had a muffler. Never was a 190XT diesel  built with a muffler and never was a production 200 built without one.
