Had to replace a 15 X 30 5 rail on my 185. What's the wheel clamp torque on the nuts? Also is there a sequence procedure like head bolts are tightened? TIA.

If you are talkin about the wheel center to axle hub, you can look up, by size and thread on google. As for sequence, tighten opposite bolts, around the circle.
if you are talkin about the PA rim clamps, I think the cams have a stop, to prevent over torqueing...

175 to 190 ft lbs on the 5 rail clamp nuts. With the tire/wheel jacked up off the ground, tighten just snug all the way around alternating between the 5 nuts. Set a block of wood on the ground close to the tire and tighten alternately while rotating the wheel assembly. If you get the wheel to rotate squarely within 1/2" wobble or less is pretty good. The eight center axle bolts are 200 to 210 ft lbs if they have no inner nuts. I can't find the torque for the longer axle bolts with the inner nuts, but would guess they might be upwards of 240 ft lbs ?? RECHECK ALL HARDWARE AT 50 AND 100 HRS OF USE.

Thanks again everyone. I'm going to do what Doc says but I won't have a tire on it till Wednesday. I'll just spin the new rim and see how much "side to side" movement I have.

You'll want the bare rim to be less wobble than the tire. Less than 1/4" should be pretty good. Zero would be nice, but maybe not doable.

Thanks Doc. My idea is to take a telescoping pickup tool and stick it horizontally on the fender and pull it out to the edge of the rim and make a poor mans dial indicator to check the spin of the rim. Let you know later how it works.

185s with 28 or 30" rims do not use cams unless they are 38" rims. The cams were dropped when Series III D17 came out. 26" Rims still used them though. |
