We lost a very good friend to my father (and myself) on April 29, 25 years to the day of my Dad's death. He was 75 and his lungs were shot! just after we laid him to rest his son said he and his mother talked it over and hoped I would be interested in his equipment that they did not intend to keep. One piece would be his HD4-G which is in excellent shape, needs nothing, paint is fair. He did not use it a lot and took perfect care of it, as he did with all his equipment. My question is what do you guys think it is should be worth and more so, what do you guys think (with in reason) is more than fair to his family. Thank You Chum.

I bought mine in 1980 for around $4000 with a 615 backhoe attachment .
I sold it (traded it on skid loader) in 1988 for $5,500 and kept the backhoe. the small machines have little value for a contractor or small landscaper but for home use or such - they are prized items. I would say in the $4 to $5 T range for a listed price, but a offer of $3 T would be in the ballpark . Like my HD5G I figure it's worth $6,000 to me bought it and 1972 for $3,200 and see people picking them up for under $1,000. I bought 2 5G machines for $2500 and sold one for $2,500 after doing repair , parted out the other one over 5 years to get $1000 back - still wonder as I had $800 in a set of tracks on the one machine. Bought a 5B dozer for $800 and sold it for $1,900 after using it for 5 years but then i had over $1,500 in repairs on that machine in the 5 years.

I guess I would ask them if they would be satisfied with what a dealer would pay for the machine brought in.
or... simply ask dealer first so you know and then ask them if they had a price in mind... and meet in the middle.
I have lost a few items over the years when I wanted the party to set the price just to be fair to them and some clown comes in and tells them they will only pay x amount... and that was 5 times less than lowball value. aargh.. so bird in hand ... Good luck.
