I have been contemplating my rather extensive group of tractors the last few months, as I think about acquiring a "permanent" spot to keep them.
In another post, the project we did at the OPOP came up. So my question is: What should happen to the Build-a-B, should Dale ever have to make a decision on the future of his museum? There have been informal conversations between some of us over the past few years, but since the project was conceived and executed through this forum and many of the members, I thought I would like to put the question out there and get opinions from both those who participated, and those who might just have been spectators, or interested observers. What do you all think?

I have housed the Build-A-B for 4 years this July in the Museum which was decided by most of the people involved in the project. I have not minded that but I do have limited space since I have this uncontrolled habit of buying more AC stuff all the time!!! If it is decided to do something about the B I would suggest maybe putting it in the auction we have on Sat. morning at the OPOP Show. The only other problem is what to do with the money from it. We have had the OPOP Show for 5 years and at this point we plan on having it for 5 more years. It cost quite a bit of money to put on the show. I will leave it at that. Dale J. Haymaker

For those of us that never seem to make it there in person I'd sure like the oppertunity to submit a sealed bid if and when the time came.

I agree with Bob D (LA). The part that I gave was donated and as for as I am concerned it is Dale's. What he does to put on a show like that takes $$$

How about a raffle like the Hutch show? It would give more people a chance at it. At $5 per ticket it wouldn't take long to make some money. It could be set up so that anyone donating to this site gets one ticket per $5 donated. Just a thought.

Dean, the raffle would be OK. the only problem is in Il. you have to be a non-profit org. to have a raffle. I am for sure not for profit but I am not registered as that with the state.

Just raffle it, and make them catch and stop you. Don't advertise it in any outlet that would draw attention from the bureaucracy and you should be good. Funds to the OPOP. I know what it takes to put on a show like that. OPOP is more elaborate than the Jamboree was, so I imagine Dale has more expense than I had, but it still costs a lot more than you would think.

I would like to add a suggestion to the mix. I have no problem with the money going to Dale's show, as it is a great show and there is no charge to come so all that he does for the show comes out of his pocket. But I think if it is going to be auctioned off and some money is made off of it, I think a portion of that money could also go to supporting this site, as without it, alot of us would never have met each other, or learned about Dales show etc. Just another idea to put out there.

I was not there for Build a B and I did not donate to the cause. Knowing Dale and most of the people involved I am sure whatever he decides will be fine.I am sure everyone trusts Dale to do what he thinks is right.
I would like to see it stay at the museum. That tractor has a story behind it and I value that as much as any rare tractor.Just my 2 cents, I realize Dale only has so much room and money doesn't grow on trees. |

As a participant in the project I think, when Dale decides it should go, it should be auctioned off, including off site bids, and the proceeds go to OPOP. If a portion were to be donated to Darin's site, that would be OK too. As was pointed out, it was through this forum that the project came to be.

I did not donate any parts or money to the build a B. For my perspective, I was a very distant spectator. I do not know the whole story. Dale would you care to elaborate briefly about the tractor? Where-What-who-why was the focus of the build? Perhaps re-visiting the original efforts will help guide you toward answers about it future?
I have not been to Dales, but I got up at 5am this morning and watched his AC collection & interview aired by Sunrise News on Channel 20 (Springfield, IL). I really enjoyed it. You have a great collection. Dale, perhaps you should begin charging per person for your annual show? I am usually very busy when your show is operating. But, some year when I get the chance, I would rather pay then to find out it has been cancelled due to loss of funds. Darrin, this is a great site. I enjoy coming to this site to gain knowledge from everyone who participates. It is truly a Blessing... If you get time, could you please email me. Many thanks to all of you..

I was a donor(not much but a donor). As far as I am conserned it is Dale's tractor. I do like the idea of the auction at Dale's but the raffle may be even better, as I think lots of us want things but we don't want others to know what we gave for it. Maybe a silent auction or a closed bid type sale. I also like the idea of donating a part of proceeds to this site. I really enjoy this forum and may take for granted the work behind it. Would hate to see it go.
Dale, do as you see fit, as I see it, we donated our parts to you and your show for entertainment. When I wear my Build a B shirt and someone asks "What's a Build a B?, and then explian it to them, they kit the biggest kick out of it. It was all for fun.
Thanks
Leon B MO

It all started with a used engine that I bought at an auction. With the help of Glenn doing the computer work, everyone donating parts , Dale receiveing the parts and storeing untill the show, and the help of everyone helping me put it togather . We all did it. I still have all the emails of it. Some pictures here. This should help you , and others . Richard

As I was reading down the posts, Chuck Luedtke hit on the same thing I was thinking about! Put the "Build-A-B" up for auction at Dale's, and the proceeds get split. Half to Dale to help with future OPOP shows, and half to Darin to help support him for this great site! The nucleus to the whole project was the link between this site and Dale. I think both men would appreciate that! We donated quite a bit to that project, and it was a lot of fun! My hat was off to Rich & Glenn for coming up with the idea. Its a shame it can't stay at the museum. After all, it is a "special tractor", but its Dale's museum, and we always have a great time at his OPOP show! Great job Dale!

I dind't get to feel the heat in the hot shed Butch cause I was in an air conditioned Hospital room in Peoria. I remember(not very well) calling Dale's and asking about it I think on Sat. The report I got was it went back in the shed for some fine tuning??? I don't remember who, but somebody from out East sent me the hydraulic pump and I rebuilt it. I also bought a cylinder and made a new rod and replaced the packings. I think I put everything in the mail on Wed. and Friday morning I didn't make it to work. :(
All I want to see out of the tractor is that the hydraulic system works. ;) I guess I'll have to get back down there to see it again. I might even fight my friend Richard for a seat on it while it's running. I think the tractor needs a place to be seen, just hope if it is sold it doesn't disappear. |
