I'm in Milwaukee for the NCAA tournament and I've got Friday and most of Saturday between games. Is there anything left of the old Allis plant to see ? Where was the plant? Besides drinking beer what else do I do in Milwaukee for 2 days?

Go fishing if the ice is gone. I had an uncle and aunt that liveb there for many years and that was his favorite pass time.

The Pabst mansion near downtown Milwaukee is a neat tour and while you are there they have some fliers for other attractions, there are some Allis or Chalmers family things. The Mitchel park domes are nearby and you can waste a little time there. And maybe a tour of Miller brewing.

The factory is located on the corner of 70th and Greenfield. Best if you can have someone point out what was where so you can really get a feel for what an amazing facility it was. You can see the smoke stacks from a long ways also. Here is link for the street view in front of the erection building. I would recommend the Milwaukee County Historical Society on N. Old World (Third) Street. They have some cool history there. Head over to Veteran's Park on the lake to Collectevo Coffee. There coffee shop is in a building that was part of the Milwaukee River Flushing System built by the E.P. Allis Company. I believe the machinery is still in there. I know you said, "besides beer," but you have to check out The Best Place at the old Pabst Brewery. They have cool tours of the building a great gift shop and BEER! Milwaukee is a neat city!

The first time I visited there (probably 15+ years ago), one of the overhead cranes from the plant had been incorporated into a shoe store in the small mall adjacent to the plant site. Don't know if it is still there. Bob@allisdowneast

There is a sign noting the effect Allis Chalmers had on West Allis, Wisconsin on at 70th and Greenfield. When I was there for "Coming Home" I had my picture taken standing beside it. In fact I wrote an article for Nan - at that time the owner of Old Allis News - which appeared in the Fall 2005 issue. With my father I visited the Allis Chalmers complex twice. Had a complete tour. Very Interesting. One of my unforgettable moments. My son and I viewed the "Coming Home" parade at Doyle's Milwaukee Inn. I don't think it is still in business but it made for a fun evening. Thanks for the tips! Besides my Purdue Boilermakers bringing home 2 victories and a trip to the Sweet 16, my son and I got to find the Allis Plant thanks to the directions here.
