For a tomb stone. I'm sorta lucky in a way. 5 blocks north and 8 blocks east of my old tire shop is a place where they cut and letter tombstones. For years we did all their tire work, so I got to know everyone working there except the new office manager. Stones start out at $6000.00 and go up to $50000.00 for a prefab mausoleum. They get stones I from all around the world. The one I want to get is red like all the rest of the stones our family has purchased the last 70+ years. This stone came from Canada. Someday we'll all be together again. I am gonna talk with a couple of other monument company's next week. Oh well, it made for a long day. Where the heck did the past 60 years go?

It might be red granite from the 'Canadian Shield' north of me. I've got a piece(2x2x4) of it here as a semi hidden lawn ornament. Crazy price for a rock, wish I could just send you this one. Lost my mom 36 years ago today. |

Yep expensive rocks - bought a flat stone 8 years back when wife passed and is in church yard just across the field from here . $800 and it's all done up with names and all but one date already inscribed .
Bought from place in River Falls WI - seems when father in law passed wifes mother bought 4 lots and 2 stones in another cemetery - then said i need to pay her for them as she bought if for me to use later . Said i had a place reserved at National Cemetery already with stone paid for (but wife nixed that for herself ) so used the church next door . Guess I will give the mother in laws choice to kids . |

I put my monument up 14 years ago about a year after I reited as caretaker of the cemetery, it's all lettered except for the finally dates and it's red and sure didn't cost near that much back then.

Toms price seems high to me, but it was 10 years or so since we did my parents.
But all the funeral arrangements are over priced, in my option. Dignity Heath and all it's off shoots is taking over the funeral business in the area. There are 4 or 5 mortuaries that have a old names from 30 to 70 years ago on them when they where competing, but if you look all owned by Dignity now. They bought the mortuary that the MIL had pre payed arrangements with from back in the 70's. Wanted opening and closing costs of grave for $2000 on top. I was going to protest and say I could hire my own backhoe for a lot less. Like they could read my mind, it was a mistake that they had asked. But the one gal sure did wine and make a big deal that it was a real bargain at 50 year old prices. Which got my wife worked up and thinking, we pre payed to be cremated before the price got any higher. With a non Dignity company. Now maybe make a deal with Shameless to shot me out his confounded "machine", so I visit all of you one last time.

Got it approved with a Monument Company, will be a plaque affixed to rear of parents stone, one for my brother, one for me, we have them bought and paid for just require the final dates, and a fee for that work. The engraver said they do this a lot anymore, not much call for full headstones except for a Family Name then a basic stone with plaques of those interred. Every monument company is a bit different but still similar.

My Wife wants to be cremated and some of her remains placed in an hour glass timer so she can participate during family game nights after she passes. I want to be planted under a live oak or pecan tree. If a pecan tree, then future generations can enjoy my _-ts.
My kids will probably do just that. |

No one gets out alive. We should all take care of this while we are here and can . An old boss of mine had his done and set on his plot in a family cemetery in so Illinois. I asked him why now ? His response was you get it done the way you want . He claimed he could not have any faith that his family would follow his wishes after he was gone.
My grandfather has a large headstone over his grave. My grandmother died in 52 long before I was thought of. I can remember as a young boy going to the cemetery with my grandfather. Both my grandparents names were on the headstone. Only thing missing was my grandfather's date of death. Why is there nothing here Grandpa ? Because I haven't died yet !!! |

Odd question, but how do they "inscribe" the final date into the stone and is that included into the "original price" ??

Portable Sand Blaster, watched the man engrave my Mother's date. And generally NO, is usually paid for after completed, just another fee.

I got my lot 22 yrs ago when dad passed, it's close to them and my sister. Then 12 yrs ago when mom passed, I got my stone and had it set. My single stone in 2010 was almost double what their double was in 2000. It's got me & my Harley one side and 200 w/cab n disc on backside. So the etching pushed up the $$.
I sent my nieces letters with instructions on handling me and my estate last winter, I hope they can do it my way. I don't want them tossing away $$ needlessly. None of them live close.

Most family will follow death instructions, at least those I have been around. Deceased brother’s second wife was big on fanfare and spending money, his funeral was a circus side show I never wish to see repeated.

Freeguy have you never been around a cemetery and seen monuments with the birthdate and no death date ???, if not maybe you should take a drive around a cemetery and get a lesson. |

Wife Informed me yesterday she was going to have me cremated and get on one of my tractors and spread me in the hayfield. I asked which tractor? She replied whichever one I can drive. I replied take the 5040 it was my first Allis Chalmers and my favorite, it will be easy for you to drive. Then it all hit me at once why is she going to be spreading my ashes?

I stopped at a different monument company this morning. The exact same stone, name of the slab was the same as the local monument company, but it was almost $2000.00 cheaper. It is exactly the same stone. Prices include setting in place. My death date will be put on after I get outta here. Its all included in the price. Guess I'll mail a package, pick up a shirt for my granddaughter, head down to moms with grocery's, meet the cemetery sexton there and then drive another 45 miles out of my way to pay for this stone.

I actually thought about making a form and filling it full of Cement. Then taking a big old stick and writing names and dates on it. I don't think the old gal would want me to bee that dang cheap. Wouldn't have been much different than the civil war markers already in the cemetery.
