The chrome running board on my truck rusted around the 'tabs' and the running board fell off. Looks like I could make some new tabs and weld them to the bottom of the running board and be good as new, lol.
I do not remember ever welding something that is chromed, is it something that has to be prepped or will a 6013 stick to it right out of the tube? Other considerations?
Thanks for your thoughts.

Grind the chrome off first.

Chrome is a surface finish usually over brass or copper coating to adhere better, will not weld, need to do any welding around chrome with a Outside Source Air hood. Will have to remove chrome finish to base metal to weld.

old skool  'triple plated chrome' was
base steel <-copper <-nickel <-chrome

basic process was clean steel, electroplate copper to it, electoplate nickel to the copper, then electroplate chrome to the nickel. each step has a LOT of labour*sanding, buffing, etc. and of course a LOT of NONuser friendly chemicals..acids and such...

have no idea what  is used today....

but, yess, need to  grind off 'chrome' to bare steel, weld, clean up THEN decide IF you want/need 'chrome' on the repair.

2 options..
1) old skool, require piece to go to plating shop, $$$$$$ and more $$$$$

2) prime and spray paint 'chrome - like' paint

3) brother got some 'markers' from hobby shop and they look very nice like chrome

Don't breath the welding fumes even after grinding it off.

scott... its not that difficult.. Your on the BOTTOM of the board. TAke a die grinder the grind off the chrome till you see CLEAN STEEL.. Go out about  1/2 inch past where you will weld. Do your welding as needed.. You might actually damage the chrome on the OPPOSITE side, depending on how hot and how thick the metal is... After welding, just touch up the bare metal and new bracket with aluminum or galvanized paint...
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

If you have any doubts or concerns make a bracket you can bolt to. Then get some chrome or stainless bolts and bolt it on.
