one of the greats!!!

The Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. —

Bluegrass legend and banjo pioneer Earl Scruggs, who helped profoundly change country music with Bill Monroe and later with guitarist Lester Flatt, has died. He was 88.

Scruggs' son Gary said his father passed away Wednesday morning at a Nashville, Tenn., hospital. Gary Scruggs said his father died of natural causes.

The elder Scruggs was an innovator who pioneered modern banjo sound. His use of three fingers rather than the clawhammer style elevated the banjo from a part of the rhythm section — or a comedian's prop — to a lead instrument.

His string-bending and lead runs became known worldwide as "the Scruggs picking style." It was perhaps most prominently displayed on the iconic theme from "The Beverly Hillbillies."

Gary Scruggs says funeral plans are incomplete.

That's a bummerCry I think a lot of celebrities could learn to be as humble a person as Earl was. One of the GREATS in music as far as I'm concerned. Have fun pickin with Lester again. .

Heard  him being interview once . He said the three finger picking style was a little  missleading it was really two fingers and a thumb. His home place is about 20 miles down the road near Boilings Springs N C  comunity of  Flint Hill. Remember the Flint Hill Special.

He won't get the press that Whitney did but he didn't die of an overdose, just old age.  Seems like the bigger the spectacle, the more publicity.
He was a great American musician, and many of use will miss him.  He did have a good life, something we can all hope for.

I read the obituary this morning and was suprised that they failed to mention that he played the theme song for Beverly Hills Billies, which most people would identify with. He has been around my entire life time, shame, life goes on.
