Hoping for some advice. I replaced a 70 year old traction Booster with a new gauge. The indicator pointer bounced around like crazy then fell of inside the gauge itself. I returned it as defective and got another one, I finally got around to putting in another one and it did it again. I left it in and finished plowing where it started leaking from the glass. Anybody have or heard of this issue before? A'm I getting bad new gauges? Do I have an hydraulic issue? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Steve

Nothing wrong with your hydraulic system, unless it's going over 3700 psi. If I was installing one, I'd probably bleed air from the line after installation of the gauge.

Just make sure you have small diameter tubing to the gauge as it helps dampen the pulsations (i.e. like water hammer).

I had the issue. Bought one and about 20 hours later the needle fell of. another 10 hours and it filled with fluid and popped the glass. It doesn't matter where you purchase from. They are all made in the same factory. Either replace your's with a 5000PSI liquid filled gauge for $20 like I did, or get your original rebuilt.

These new ones are all made in China. They aren't worth the aggravation. There are SOME that are old stock that were made in the US, but you've gotta ask the vendors on here. NONE of these China ones are any good.
Do as Tuck says and just install the simple pressure gauge. That is if you're just looking for one that WORKS and not for a parade vehicle. I put one on my WD45 3 or 4 years ago and it's still working great. |

Now I know if I ever have a WD45, don't toss the old gauge!

Yes, Matt Folkers aka Oldoug repairs them. I've got a couple 3 laying around that I need to send to him for fixing up. I don't know if you HAVE to send him the old one, but I think so. Otherwise I think he charges you more with no core.

Does anyone know for sure if Oldoug still repairs them? I wish he would chime in on some of these post. I looked his name up once, but I'm reluctant to just PM him out of the blue.

I', not all that worried about traction booster gauge working, I have been on the seat of WD/WD45's for years (more than we need to talk about LOL) and don't even look at the gauge working ground, you can fell what's going on with your rear-end so if it was me just get a non-working gauge and look at it. lol

3 WD45's with power steering,G,D15 fork lift,D19, W-Speed Patrol, "A" Gleaner with a 330 corn head,"66" combine,roto-baler, and lots of Snap Coupler implements to make them work for their keep.

I got a rebuilt one at the Allis Connection show in Amana. It's been a few years, but I think it was Norm Meinert that had them.

It's your choice. Personally I'm not worried about someone hunting me down at a show to tell I have a pressure gauge instead of a traction boost gauge. Here's a similar discussion form a few years ago with my favorite quote from CTucker.
I said I didn't want the correct police after me and Charlie says "Ya, but with the cost savings, you can still afford the fine" Honestly you don't need it. Some WD's didn't even have a gauge. It is kinda fun to watch though and I think a standard pressure gauge is cheaper than a non-working Allis Gauge. I bought a Valley gauge and even has a persion orangish color too it.

Just a dumb question, How does a traction booster gauge differ from a pressure gauge? As long as I can remember mine has never worked.

It's just a pressure guage without PSI markings. I think I have a couple on the shelf I removed. The 190 I pulled the tub guage and put a oil pressure guage in its place and the CA guage looked dorky on that little bracket sticking out from the steering post. I've never even looked at either WD 45 but they probibly don't work. I just put the lever in the middle when I plowed.
