Starter spins but doesnt engage the ring. Pulled starter, ring looks fine. When I engage the starter, the gear on it spins, but it is supposed to move forward as well to engage the ring, correct? Well it isnt...

That is how it suppose to work!
Can you turn the gear by hand? and resistance?
The force of the rotation should spin it in to engage.

Sometimes there is a burr that the gear hangs up on. You may need to use a Dremel grinder to remove the burr.

Sometimes the bendix needs cleaning and a light application of dry film lube. It is probably a burr as mentioned or some grease and dirt holding the gear back.

Because it is an "inertia" bendix,it must be free to spiral down the shaft.

Didnt try to spin it manually, it does spin when powered up...but doesnt travel down the shaft. Thanks guys, will check for a burr or the like.

Use some kind of cleaning agent (brake clean, carb clean) to clean the crud and sprinkle some graphite on it. Don't oil or grease the shaft.

Never oil a bendix drive! Do as Tuck said. Clean the drive with Brakekleen and dust it with graphite spray. Good to go. If oil starts slinging into the starter motor, you're gonna have a mucky gooy mess inside the motor that you don't want.
