Good afternoon from not-so-cold New England.
I'm mounting the snap coupler latches on the lift arms on my WD45. The latches are drilled for a ~ 3/8" pin; one latch still has the pin, which I've removed in the photo below. It's lying on top of the latch. (Sorry about the size of the photo - must be a new trick I need to learn!) I'm wondering what the function of that pin is. There's a larger hole bored in the end of each lift arm, but the holes in the latch don't line up with it. Should the pin be inserted in the latch and the latch slid on until the end of the arm hits the pin? Or should I not use the pin? Thanks for your help! Dave

I can't see enough of the coupler in picture but that looks like a CA coupler to me.

Perhaps so....I have a CA with latches - but I have no way of knowing whether they are correct for the CA! Could someone post photos of the correct latches for the CA and/or WD45?

To downsize a picture ALREADY on the forum, right click on the picture,
then hit "View image". This will resize so you can see the whole picture. Now on most (not all) pictures, you can left click and it will enlarge the picture. Left click again and it will go back to the smaller picture. Hit the go back arrow to return the picture to the "over sized" size and this also puts you back on the thread where you first right clicked. Clear as mud? LOL Den |

I compared the WD45 and CA latches this morning. The CA latch body, which slides onto the lift arm, is much wider than the WD45 latch body - 2" vs 1.3". The CA latches are bolted through the lift arm where the WD45 latches are clamped in place by a lock bolt. (I'm saying WD45 here since that was how these were described to me when I bought them. I'm not sure that they ARE WD45 latches.

Thanks, Stu (and Brian G). My WD45 is a 1955 per the serial #. Looking at the picture you posted, my lift arms would match up with #5 - that loop (sized for a large pin) drops below the latch body enough to line up with the holes in the ends of the lift arms on my tractor. The loop diameter looks like it'd match the diameter of the lift arm holes as well. So I suspect that my tractor has 1958 lift arms. Maybe someday I'll run across a pair of the 1958 latches.

The large hole toward the bottom of the lift arm latch is for the stabilizing bar that goes between the two lift arms. Below are some pictures of some lift arm latches with the stabilizing bar which I have. The set screw on the side of the latch screws into the lift arm of the tractor. These are the type of latches I have on my WD 45.

Dave, I have those on one of my WD45's also, but they are not correct. They were made for the D-17 (post WD45).

Thanks guys. So now I'm wondering what the ends of the lift arms on my WD45 should look like! Any chance that Allis changed the WD45 arms and latches to match those on the D17 at the end of the WD45 run?

Somehow we need to get these 2 documents that were shared into the knowledge base section of the site. These would both be so valuable for future generations. Any one know how to get them there? Thanks.

Actually, they are apparently correct for the later WD-45. You will see that I make reference to a #4 on the page I copied from the manual. It is like #5 except it does not have the extra heavy lower "hook". Although the manual doesn't specifically show it we know it does exist. It is probably one of the more common latches and is like Dave (NE)'s. They come up on e-bay often. It is also interesting that the page I copied is from a WD/WD-45 parts manual. I assume it was published after the introduction of the D-17 which accounts for the HD D-17 style latch being shown. It states clearly that what I call "HD" style latch was used after Nov. 1958, long after the WD-45 ended production. I think I have at least one set of every style made around the place somewhere. Here is a picture of the last version (my #5) of lift arm latch. There may actually be later versions but if so, I am not aware of them. This was apparently used on D-17 and maybe the 170 tractor as well. From my experience, these don't show up too often so they may even border on being called "rare". The much heavier design of the lower "hook" is shown clearly. The ones like shown in Dave(NE)'s pictures are the ones I run into most often. Edited by Brian G. NY - 29 Jan 2017 at 4:36pm |

Ah. The plot thickens!
Are the lift arms bored to accommodate the pin used with latches like #2 in Brian's diagram? Would it be possible to get pictures of the various designs of the lift arms that were used with the different latch designs?

Thanks Brian. I don't have those heavier ones....... I guess they must be rare as I don't remember ever seeing them.
