Is it normal to hear the final drives while driving. Mine makes a low growl sound. Have plenty of oil in the trans.

The "final" drives are the big bull gears powered by the pinion gears off the differential ouput shafts.
So.........you may want to pull the plugs on the final drive pans to see if they are full.
A certain amount of whine/howl is normal; especially on a tractor that has been really worked over the years.

I bought a '53 wd-45, and changed all the fluids, and found no metal shaving. There is a gear noise everytime I work it. I'm not worried about it. If you hear growl and grinding then check fluids for metal. You don't have to drain all of it to check. Good luck.

My WD 'sings' pretty well, too. It has not gotten any worse in the ten years that I have had it. It seems quietest in 4th, which it doesn't get into very often, only when goin' for the mail!.
