I bought a 1955 WD45, and it has a 45 motor, no side plate, but the engine serial number is WD 330654X-PA ( and the D is backwards).
Just curious how the engine serial number is so messed up

The tractor didn’t come from Alabama did it? The is a pair of brothers down there that has been known to put replacement castings into tractors and sell them with any desired serial number. They don’t know up from down as well as being dyslexic.

Per Bryan Smiths website: a 1955 WD-45 engine should only have 5 numbers, Engine Serial Number range between 50982 and 80605 Perhaps the 33 is two hits of an 8 Gary http://wsmth.people.clemson.edu/SNFind/esn_tsn6.htm

Paul, no the tractor was in Missouri all its life. And the numbers are weakly struck, but evenly spaced. There are several things wrong with the serial number. It should start with 45, not WD, and certainly not with the D backwards it has the X which it should not have, it ends in PA, and all 45's either had G for gasoline engines, GH for the lpg engine or K for the kerosene engine, the 45's did not have the A after the last letter, and 45's never used a P suffix.

s/n 330,000 isn't unreasonable for a WC/WD 201 engine. I'm going to guess it was an engine built after 1953 and the old style WC/WD blocks were phased out to the WD45 style block. A compression test might reveal that it is only a WD engine and not a WD45.

It would be interesting to know the "tractor" Serial number.
Could be a WD Tractor with a replacement block.
After all the WD replacement blocks were used up, replacements were all the WD-45 style.

I thought I put the tractor serial number on the thread. The tractor number is WD205961 as best I can tell, clearly a WD45 and it has a 45 block with no plate. The zero looks more like a 6, but that can't be as the last WD45 was 236958. I'm going to remove all the paint to double check.
The block is definitely a WD45 block.

Could the engine be a LeRoi? I don't know if there are any records of engine numbers for them, but I have seen ones that look every bit like an Allis WD45 block.

The block has the casting number am 3853-21 and from all appearances is AC; tall head, short valve cover, has an old original manifold with the vacuumed port with pipe thread plug.

And.... that might account for the odd serial number on his engine....the dealer replacing the engine was supposed to transfer the serial number from the old engine and may have done it incorrectly.
I have a WD-45 with a replacement block which has no number.

Interesting that the serial number starts with "WD". Any WD-45 gas engine s/n started with 45- XXXXXX.

Dr. Allis, that was exactly my point. It should start with 45, it shouldn't have an X and it shouldn't end in PA. I understand that replacement blocks were blank and dealers were supposed to stamp the old original number in the new block (and that many were left blank) but I can't understand stamping a 45 motor with such a wrong WD serial number (even the D is backwards!).
It is currently stuck but was always inside a barn so I'm hoping it will free up with soaking, but i may take the head and oil pan off just to see if anything is unusual.
