I have a WD45 that has completely discharges the battery after just a few hours of use. This tractor was converted to a 12 volt system and now has an ignition switch. In probing the system, I noticed that the ignition and accessory terminals all short directly to ground when the key is in the run position. I disconnected one component at a time until the short disappeared. What I found is that the coil terminal on the distributor is shorted directly to ground. So now I am wondering, can this distributor be rebuilt or is there a source where I can buy one.
Thanks in advance. |

The problem has nothing to do with your distributor.

What they are saying is the distributor is internally grounded, that's normal. If it is discharging the battery while running it is not charging properly. did you test the voltage at the battery with it off and with it running?

Coil or the Ignition switch could be the culprit!

The coil terminal on the dist would always be shorted to ground when the points are closed. Sounds like your alt isn't working. Put a volt meter across the battery with the engine running at half throttle or more and see what it reads. Should be about 14 volts. The distributor is not your problem. Open the points and your dead short to ground will go away.
