Haven't run the old WD45 for about 8 years, put new head gasket in and started cleaning the fuel system. Cleaned tank out and was running gas through the TSX464 carb and it didn't seem right. Took the carb off and split it. This is what I found. AARGH! Never thought I would see this. ![]() So, The old WD45 has the overbore pistons and wondered if it should have had a slightly larger carb on it, like a D17 carb? This one really looks like a challenge to fix up again, though I got floats and repair kit coming for it, but if somebody has a good carb , I would be interested in it.

D-17 carb is almost identical to the WD45 carb.

. You might resurrect this carb except for that big chip out on the lower left side of the image. Perhaps a game of JB Weld?? Water and ice in there did a number on it. I have been surprised by Tractor Supply's inventory of carbs and parts, most targeted at the Ford/Ferguson models but there might be something for an AC WD. .

I think you might be seeing remnants of a split open float. You might be surprised how that would clean up with a glass bead blast cabinet.

Just find a good used carb. By the time you think you can save this one it will have jets you cannot remove and the cost of the parts will exceed a different carb anyway.

Heck, that looks like some of the Carburetors that come in here for rebuilding. Some of em' look like they've been laying in the bottom of a pond! LOL! I get some of em' whipped back into shape though. I have a few 464 cores. Nothin' rebuilt yet, but if interested, I can probably put one together for ya. Your call. Steve@B&B

Ultrasonic Cleaner might help see what you are actually working with. Harbor Freight has an inexpensive option. .

there is enough of those around, as Dr Allis says, it aint worth messing with. But here is my question, how'd that happen? both floats leaked, then froze and burst? I suspect that you are going to find some damage in one or two cylinders too!

The problem is the Ethenol. That crap when it sits for a long time it turns fuel to goo. Works almost as good as super glue. He probably pulled the two halves apart and the goo held the pontoons in the float bowls and when he pulled it apart the floats stayed in the float bowls and the pontoons ripped off.....Seen that many a time..... Steve(Ill), it does look like Lon has the buy of the day, but would like
to keep the old M/S carb as it came with from the factory.
Lou,
when the tractor was parked, it was shut off and the next time I went
to use it, radiator was low on coolant and the oil level was high. and
that was a sickening sight. I drained the water out of the oil and
pulled the key out. never shutting off the gas. Several
years went by and I pulled the old tractor out and pulled the drain
plug on the crankcase and pulled the hose of the engine block drain.
Then pulled the head and put water back into the block to see if the
lower end would leak and it did not. Drained the block again and covered
it up. couple more years slid by and here we are, starting to work on
it again. Put new head gasket in and tightened down just to get it back
together. Next step was to add gas and found the tank to
be rusty inside and empty. The tank was never rusty until it sat the
last years. Gas cap doesn't fit tight anymore and must have gotten water
into the tank and went down to the carb... and it didn't help that the
tank probably had the cheap alcohol fuel sitting in it. over the period
of time rusting and corroding things. Thus here I am with the problems
created by not repairing the tractor right away when the head gasket had
failed.... or even taking steps to mothball it to preserve it for a
later date such as draining the gas out of it. ![]() Steve
NJ, You are right about the ethanol in the rotten cheap gas, and the
floats were corroded off before I took the carb apart. ![]() Cleaned the carb up some, now to soak it for awhile to see if the jets will come loose... But what the rebuild Kit I ordered did not include was the float hanger. Notice the insert in photo. Does somebody have a new hanger and rivets that I can get to replace this grungy old one? ![]() The
Ultrasonic cleaners look like something that might work good for
cleaning, and I was thinking about the electrolysis cleaning method too.
Hope I get the jets out easily. and the reality is... ![]() ![]() |

Jerry, That Carburetor can be saved, but the ole' girl is gonna need a ton of work. I'm lookin' at the lower bowl. Is that a crack in the bowl or just a stain? If that's a crack, you're probably better off getting another 464 core to rebuild with the issues it has. The float pivots I don't mess around with when I'm rebuilding customer Carburetors. It would be cheaper for the customer to me to replace the upper section then spend an hour or so bench time trying to fix that pivot. I toss those bad boys. Being its your own Carb, you could spend the time to repair it if you wanted to. The problem is, if the holes aren't true to one another, the floats will either move around, or stick on the pivot pin in the bowl causing possible flooding issues. From a rebuilders point of view, it's not worth the aggravation that me and the customer would go through to try to repair a problem like that. There's plenty of 464's out there.... HTH Steve@B&B

Thanks Steve. No crack in the bowl, Camera enhanced the hard scratches from busting the rust loose in the reservoir. With your information on the float pivots, new plan, clean them up and tin/silver solder little washers to the outside of the posts and then drill new hole through tight enough to hold the pin firm. No removing the bracket. ![]() Our old 170 , if you ran it out of gas, you would have to had just some gas and whack the carb to get the floats to start floating again, then finish filling. Had enough of that and took carb apart and centered the floats and they don't stick down anymore when it does run out of gas, but then it hasn't been out of gas for years
