This subject has come up many times on this site, to start it would be best if you had some kind of repair manual that shows a picture of how they are assembled. the shoes are in two halves and must come out the top after removing the tin cover. there is a pin on the bottom of the brake housing (center bottom) that comes out from the outside. this pin will come out one of two ways -- hard or easy. You will find much good help on this site,, a brake job on one of these can be dificult but it is also rewarding and always good idea to have brakes!!

I did my brakes and finished them last weekend, If you need some information I sent you a pm. I can send you a PDF on the brakes from my AC Manuel to a email. I also have a great forum member that relined my shoes and can pass his name along to you, he also did a great job refacing my clutch a few years ago.
Danny I hope this is not how one of your pins come out! ![]() Edited by dannyraddatz - 18 Jul 2012 at 5:31am |

Did you learn any new words dealing with that pin Danny? :) They're the same on early D17. My left side didn't fight much at all, but the right side sure worked my patience. Had to weld a 1/2" bolt to the head of the pin to draw the right side out.

i have done a few wd's and wd45 tractors brake jobs the last one i did i heated it and after a 1 hour of fighting i torched the pin out from the out side all the way through to the center after the out side half came out the inside came with some love taps and a big punch and my maul hammer shoes were gone.. If you do torch it cut the pin in half threw the bottom inspection hole first and heat the out side up and try driving it in
till the pin bottoms out on the inside half than torch some more of the pin away again and drive it in repeat until outside pin falls out. maybe you will get lucky and you can pull yours out with a good old vise grips some guys on this sight know where there is a tool to get that pin out. there are pics on this site some were of that tool i just cant remember were??????sorry ~AMP~ ![]() |

Dan,
Did all the scanned documents help you. If you need more information you have my cell number. The best advise I can give you is to power wash the rear brake well till all the mud is out of the casting area. Plug the lower casting hole and fill up the cavity work krolil oil till the brake pins are covered. Wait a week and try turning the pins. If your lucky they will move and your brake job just got a lot easier. |

One thing I'll add, because I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere regarding these Allis-Chalmers brake jobs... I had a sort of epiphany when a friend's little boy had just discovered "Chinese Handcuffs," that go over the fingers - something I'm sure everyone over the age of 6 knows about, lol. ANYWAYS- I realized that with the brake pins going through holes in the shoes, etc., that any wobble or off-centered effect of any part(s) that the pin passes through would, or at least could, cause a similar binding effect. And maybe that's why there's so much trouble getting them out, sometimes, at least with some of them. So I put it to the test, and - well, who can say that keeping the parts jiggled while pulling, and stopping when I felt the pin bind at the same time as I felt the shoes etc. go rigid, made the difference. Or if it was a month of spraying Seafoam* DeepCreep* every few days for a month or so. Or both. But, it's worth a try, and if you think about the effect of parts binding on the pin as it's being withdrawn, it makes sense. I wish you well!

Gary Agrimson makes a good pin puller. Norm Meinert handles them too. That puller with some heat to the housing will usually free them.

after pressure washing all thedirt daubers and mouse nest out of housing use a 2 inch plumbing test plug to plug bottom opening. silicone up slots for brake rods, and fill cavity with your lubricant of choice. wait a couple of weeks, smack end of pin with shop hammer wait a couple more weeks, get air chisel and grind down bit to fit end of pin, crawl under tractor and use vibration of chisel to push pin out. this method may take more calendar days, but will end up taking fewer man hours and 4 letter words

One thing nobody has mentioned: Perhaps the brakes just need adjusting. When I purchased a second WD45 a few years back I though it needed new brakes. First I decided to adjust them thanks to some advice on this forum. Success! The brakes now work fine and I did not have to deal with the pin removal process. Just a thought..

Glad I had Rings in Rushville IL replace them in my one WD probably... Goodness, 10 or 12 years ago. My other WD, I may have to tackle myself one of these days... Keeping track of this thread!

Definitely not a fun job, but it is really nice to have brakes that work! I've done two now, had to use the hot knife on the last one. Need to do the CA and the D-17, not this year though.

After taking the seat plate off I got a better look at the brakes and noticed on both sides the shoe return springs were broke on one side. Prob the reason I don’t have brakes? Hopefully saved a headache here guys!

Dan,
The part number page that I emailed you has all the Allis Chalmers numbers. You have to put a 70 in front of those numbers to update them to the AGCO number system currently in use. Danny |

Don't think broken springs have any thing to do with no brakes. The springs just keep shoes off drums and you MUST "center" the shoes when adjusting or you'll wear out one shoe.

What I did on mine was weld a grade 8 bolt to the head of the pin. The bolt was like 6" long IIRC. Then I slid a piece of pipe over the bolt long enough that just a little bit of thread was showing. I used a thrust bearing intended for installing wheel studs on a car without pulling the hub and drew the nut down. It worked just like a gear puller and pulled the pin right out. You need to use grade 8 bolt. I started with a grade 3 and the threads stripped.

The difficulty in replacing the brake shoes is compounded with the urgency of time. If you are patient and allow the pins to soak it will be a much easier job. Oh and a small pipe wrench works pretty good to rock the pin back and forth. If you ever see the pin move even just a tiny amount then you have won.
